Up 2-3 Feet the Easy Way

There is a location I am looking to enter through a broken window which is probably ten or eleven feet off the ground. Basically, it's just high enough that I can't easily pull myself up to it, but not so high that I would need to seek a Jester-style rope solution (or just find a different entrance -- I have been all around the building and this is by far the most promising place for entry).

I am looking for a compact way to boost myself up just an extra 2-3 feet, which I think would give me the height to pull myself up and in (with the ability to check around the edge of the pane for remaining shards of glass). One of the problems is that I have to walk a ways (where I will be seen by traffic) to get to this place, so I can't be carrying a trampoline or a ladder or anything without attracting attention. One of the plus sides, though, is that the window is pretty wide -- probably five or six feet -- so once I grab a side of it and get an arm over, I should be perfectly able to swing up my leg and get inside.

My initial thought was to saw off a board about 2 - 2.5 feet long and step up onto that and then grab the edge of the window and pull myself in. The major drawback from this solution is that I wouldn't get the opportunity to check out the window ledge first -- I'd just have to make sure I was wearing thick gloves and pants and hope for the best.

Does anyone else have any ideas? If it helps, this location is set up so that if it were something I had to leave outside below the window (as in my possible solution, where the board would fall over and stay outside, rather than my taking it inside with me) that's okay, as long as it is lying down and not super-reflective. I just can't leave anything dangling from the window itself, or even leaning against the wall for more than a minute or two, or it will be seen by passing traffic.

Any suggestions?

P.S. -- I realize that the ideal solution would be to take someone along with me and have him/her boost me up and then pull him/her in. Anyone from WNY want to come along on what may be a fruitless (or possibly really cool) exploration?

You can get way more than 2 or 3 feet easy. Just point your rocket launcher at the ground, and jump as you pull the trigger. Should get you up to the roof in no time ;)

On a bit more serious note, the piece of wood is a fine idea. Just tie a string to it, and you can take it in with you. And if you were to whittle it down, hollow it out, put a big long sharp piece of metal in it, and tie the string in a nice bow, you'd have a nifty sword like tool that ninjas used to use back in the day ;)

There always seems to be useful trash around when you need it most.

I just had the same need a couple weeks ago and, lo and behold, someone had tossed an empty 5-gallon paint bucket against a fence nearby. Inverted, it made a perfect step stool that I could jump from and grab the concrete sill.

Need more height? Look for an old pallet to lean against the wall - or an empty barrel/trashcan.

Check for glass or, better yet, wear work gloves!

Once when climbing into a hole in a wall 15 or so feet off the ground, I got in by scouring the surrounding area for junk, eventually found about 12 feet of steel tubing with half-foot long bolts through it every 2 feet or so, so I used that as a makeshift ladder, and at another site I used what appeared to be the remains of a bed-head to climb down from a high wall. I guess the best thing is to look around and see what junk you can find.

Some good ideas... thanks.

Unfortunately I've pretty much scoured the area the two times I've been there and been unable to get inside, and there doesn't seem to be any "good" trash lying around. The building looks like it's been abandoned for some time, and it's not a convenient dump point for people, so the surrounding area has stayed clean for the most part.

Depending on how big the opening is, you could just carry a suitcase with a small rope tied to the handle. Stop, stand on the suitcase, get to the opening, and pull up your suitcase and take it inside with you. A suitcase isn't all that weird to carry.

If you only need an extra few feet, and aren't too worried about glass shards in the window frame, then I recommend a run at the wall and just take a few steps up it. Seriously, even 2 steps straight up a wall can let me reach higher then a jump at it ever could. Just run straight at the wall, hop onto it, and then push straight up, using the forward momentum to keep your foot gripping on the wall and pushing you up. It could easily get you the extra feet to make a grab at it. Just try it out somewhere else, see how high you can get.

A wooden pallet can work wonders, and nobody would give it a second thought propped up against some building. We've made use of them as makeshift ladders on more than one occasion.

Hey Mat, never bothered to notice what you drive, but maybe an extension ladder is in order?

Thanks, all, for the great suggestions. These may indeed be of use to me for future reference.

Unfortunately I just got back from the location in question and discovered something that I never noticed before, that would almost certainly get me busted. The whole damn place is see-through! I'm not talking like a glass building or something -- I'm not THAT unobservant. But the main corridors are set up so that the windows are directly across from one another, to let in natural light. Aaaaaand, in my case, let my flashlight be seen by every single car that passes by.

I happened to notice this little feature tonight because there were low clouds reflecting the light from a nearby city and I could clearly see the reddish glow "through" the building. I briefly considered going inside anyway and just trying to keep my light low-profile, but on a second pass by the building I saw that it's not just the corridors that are like this -- it's the whole main part of the building. And furthermore, it's near a very major thoroughfare and I would almost certainly be spotted if I tried to explore any part of the structure using a light of any sort. (And as I was making final considerations about whether to make an attempt, a police cruiser drove past me, so I decided to retreat.)

Bah! So now I am annoyed, with myself for not noticing the building's layout before (it appeared from my initial survey that only one side had windows) and with the entire situation because this location will become inaccessible once the snow starts to pile up, which should be any day now. (Of course, it's relatively inaccessible right now, if only because of the window thing.)

So I need to find a new target and forget about this one until Spring. And until I get some night-vision goggles. :-p

With all that natural light, just lose the flashlight and use your natural night vision. Save the flashlight for areas without windows.

Mat, I explore places all the time with settings like that. As suggested, lose the flashlight, and if you must, use a small colored led light, something faint. You won't be taking flash pictures ot anything, but you could get some long exposures if you have a camera that will do that. Otherwise, you just explore to see it yourself...

I agree. Just be cautious and go.

Also, you could get creative with a few pieces of 2x4 and some strong hinges. It could fold and unfold, would cost very little and fit in a backpack. Just go to a hardware store and play around.

One of those hook ended fire escape ladders would be all right too. They roll up small and would get you the whole way up.
