I usually explore alone, because i dont know anyone who explores. My friends think its stupid and boring. How did you find other explores/get others to come along?

I've found a few friends who are interested, but it is hard sometimes to find dedicated people. Sometimes I run into other explorers online or through other contacts, or by running into them while exploring. You just have to be willing to meet new people and somewhat open about your hobby, eventually you'll find someone who shares your interests.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

exactly, I basically only had one friend who liked to explore, then I met a lot of cool people that I go exploring with on a regular basis just from the internet

Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone

For a while I had the hardest time finding people to explore with. That's why I made my first UE webpage, to try to meet other like-minded people. I guess it worked, but it seems to me that most new people I meet just want guided tours of locations, instead of coming along on a new exploration. Oh yeah, I also tell everyone I know about my explorations... I get a lot of crazy looks, but over time some of them have gotten pretty interested (my boss wants to go tunneling now!).

I have a few people i explore with when we can get together being none of them live in my town, and i met them all on the net through various things like this, all awesome people...in between when we can get together i just research places and do some drive bys ..i never explore alone unless its a place i know well and feel comfortable with. I also take my daughter when i can coax her into getting off her lazy but, she likes to go and has been going with me for quite some time, but alas she is 16 , she has better things to do then follow her mom around old abandoned places.

I generally don't find anyone. The people I've gone with before either want to explore too quickly (I like to take my time, take pictures, etc.) or they have this need to take out their aggression on inanimate objects (vandalism), so I tend to fly solo most of the time.

EDIT: And everyone on here seems to live a fair distance away. :\

I also can't find anyone that is dedicated to it at all, or gets the least bit excited. I tend to find people that like the idea of exploration but have more fun breaking stuff and tagging on walls and stuff. I don't stand for that on my outings so I've been going alone most the time lately. I too started a site/blog to hopefully get the idea out there that people in my town/area can UE and have fun doing it. I'm hoping to get someone on board cause I've got a 16 acre factory I'm working on now and I've only gotten to one building of it so far. Well good luck with finding people, the internet can be a great resource for it, but people that seem cool online can turn out to be the complete opposite in real life.

It's amazing the people that are interested in this stuff. At work, all it takes is a mention of a location and the reaction isn't the expected "are you nuts?". Not at all it's more on the order of "I wish I could see what the inside (or outside) of that place looks like now". To which I say "You Can!"
Either that or I get the " When I was a kid we used to go in there to scare our girlfriends" reaction.

I don't know many explorers, usually I explore with 2-3 friends. But I also like to explore alone,it's another approach which in group.

Heh, I got a really cool guy in my class into it in the most indirect way possible. He sits behind me in class, and after a while of staring blankly into space during class, my screensaver comes on, which cycles through all my UE pics. He started complimenting me and telling me about some abandoned places he knew of but had never explored. He's into photography too, so I took him out and he had a great time. In fact, I just got back from exploring with him about 20 minutes ago.

Convert them, that's how I do it! Some of my friends are into photography, so I bring back hot photos from mental hospitals and they orgasm. Some of my friends are into graff, so I take them into some places to check that out (But not to tag! No graffiti allowed under my watch.)
Most people I tell seem to be pretty impressed by it and ask to go and I end up having to turn them down because I only like to go with experienced people these days.

I agree with Dukes and NoRegrets -- often people are held back from exploring simply because they think of places as being "off limits," and they don't even think about going inside because "that would be wrong."

But as soon as someone says, "yeah, I went inside there, and check out these cool pictures I took," the person often says, "wow, are you going anywhere else soon?" I know, because I used to be one of these people. I heard stories about an abandoned house that a friend had gone into and, even though I would never have thought to go inside on my own, I ended up going in with her because it was cool.

So it can't hurt to attempt to convert people you already know and like. Also, stick with trying to find a local "scene." Buffalo seems to have a lot of explorers, but I haven't gone anywhere with any of them yet. I have been in touch with them, though, and we might end up doing some stuff soon -- it's just taken a while for everyone to be in synch.

Since my last post on this topic I've found a few people to explore with and has some great times. What I did mostly was just talk about it. I never use the term "urban exploring" really but I do say "exploring" or "explore" and that tends to get peoples ears to perk up. People in general find the hobby rather fascinating but many are too scared to go. I'm really suprised by the amount of people that have been very intrested in going though. It really comes down to just talking about it and not being scared to admit you've been to some places you aren't supposed to go. Obviously you have to think before you talk but in general most people don't care if your exploring an abandoned building or something like that as long as your respectfull. I was in a bar after an explore of a factory and talked to the bar owner about the factory. He gave me all sorts of info and cool stories about the place. He even called up some buddies that used to work there and had them give me a few tid bits of info that could be usefull to explore. As soon as I told them that I don't destroy stuff and am very respectfull they were more than happy to assist me with information and even ask me about what the place is like these days.

I started out going with just 1 or 2 friends who I explored with on a regular basis but each new person I meet had new friends who wanted to explore, etc. and it's been almost exponential. Now, I have a really hard time keeping the group reasonably small when I go and have to turn people down sometimes, which I hate doing.

Keep looking around and you will find more people - a lot of us exist, we're just quiet about it.

Hey, SPEK, you've explored with UEM more than once. Don't play the "lone wolf" card. ;)

I've found most people that I've met through the net (especially at OPEX where I got to meet some truly cool explorers) have been nice, I've gotten a couple of friends into it (though others reject it)

I don't usually have trouble finding exploring partners. It's way more fun to go with someone, and less dangerous too.

OK, Tux you got me! I went: 1,2,3,4 times exploring with other people.

I'll start over again:

I always explore alone except for very special occasion like checking a very rare place, I that case I go with UEM.

Although most of my friends share the view "you can't have fun exploring, you're just inside a building, whats fun about that?" (incedentally these friends have never explored anything in their life and much prefer video game). Two people out of my group are actually quite dedicated and with them I have exhausted most of my towns locations. There are a couple others who are semi-interested also.

Kirby, have your heard of NUES? If not you should look them up, that would be my first step, expand your net beyond UER. Next talk to friends and see if they'll convert, don't be forceful, people are interested or their not and dragging someone out usually turns into a hand holding and whine fest.

Next try searching the guestbooks and forums of other UE websites. This is how UEA pretty much got started, we all found Mr. Sable's Industrial Archeology site and posted in the guestbook. Then you can leave contact information in UE locations in a nice anonymous form like an email address. That's how the Cave Clan used to operate (actually a PO box but similar idea).

If you decide to start a web site people will start to come to you. Be warned you'll attract morons as well as genuine explorers.

UEA used these methods and what I thought was a city with a totally dead UE scene has gotten too big to handle in some respects in only 3 or 4 years.
