Costumes / Masks / Props

Does anyone have costumes or outfits they've used in the field?

I have an odd haircut, a hat helps a little, but it's still noticable seeing a 22 yr old guy hanging around partially used old-age homes in hospital grounds. I wish I had an old man costume like in the Jackass movie. They had profesional make-up artists make almost thier whole bodies look old. The faces look a little odd, but pretty authentic. Imagine seeing an old man with a cane hobble down the street, hop a fence then sprint into the woods. trip out sh*t heheh

I've often thought what the legal ramifications would be if such a person hobbled up to my gas station counter and bought a pack of cigarettes. I have a lot of empty time during the day....

Anyway, that would be cool to have, but sitting for four hours and paying mad cash for such a disguise wouldn't be worth it. Just say you're visiting granny, or pull a Jester.

I have all kinds of stuff that I use for explorations. I usually just try to look like a photographer and carry a tripod and such, and I got some business cards printed that say I'm an industrial photographer.

I also have a local telephone company workmans shirt, as well as a hard hat and orange saftey vest. So I can pose as a telco lineman or a construction worker pretty easily.

Also, a nice suit always helps in hotels, malls, and other places where people do business.

Just doing some research/recon on a place before you go for it can give you an idea of what people there usually wear. Also find out what is nearby that you could use as an excuse for being there without having to provide credentials (or credentials you could fake). Some places you could pass as an employee pretty easily, in others it's nearly impossible. I just try to make sure that I don't stick out too much in whatever place I'm at, I want it to be believable that I'm supposed to be there, but also easily forgettable.

LOL.

Let the wars begin.

I liberated a hard-hat from work a while back, but have yet to use it in UE. The hard-hat may help, but I don't have any other clothes that look like 'construction' clothes, or something to go along with the hard-hat. Another thing you could consider for a 'costume' is wearing dress clothes (maybe from Valu Village, Goodwill, or the Salvation Army), jacket and a tie. Being in your early twenties can be harmful to scouting or UE, but being dressed up nicely wouldn't hurt at all.

Business cards are a great idea I never thought about that.

If my guise was other than an independant worker (ie photographer) I wouldn't feel comfortable until I got a LOT of info about the job I'm supposedly in.

Like what if authorities ask to speak to your supervisor or your company etc.. Can you be fined with impersonating someone other than a police officer?

Construction and security are probably the most valuable costumes for UE, but there's definetely others. Question: If you disguise yourself as a security guard, is it legally impersonating an officer, or do rent-a-cops not count.

Look out, first post here.

http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/tlo/77R/billtext/HB00940F.HTM

Apparently it's illegal in Texas, so I would assume this is common with other states. They sure don't define what a "Security Officer" is very well, though.

As for a construction worker, unless it's illegal to walk around with a hard hat and orange vest on (Officer, I was worried about asteroids hitting me and cars not seeing me, honest!) I can't see how that one would ever be considered illegal, other than the cop would get mad because you confused him.

I can see it being illegal to impersonate a rent-a-cop if they have actual authority over the common citizen, but if they fall in the same genre of bouncers, what's to stop ya.

I know I have a pig mask layin around somewhere...

I don't know about impersonating a construction worker but I have heard and am almost positive that impersonating a telephone company worker is serious. If there isn't a law against it, the telephone company will try to sue you for all you've got. They really don't like that at all.

Also, I got a hard hat but have never used it. When people visit a construction site they are required to wear a hard hat, including business people looking at the progress. Wearing a suit and tie and hard hat is actually not that unusual but if you could just wear jeans, a white t-shirt and orange vest with your hard hat you would look less important and therefore be more invisible.

There's no charge for "impersonating a construction employee", but there is for impersonating an officer. I just wasn't sure if rent-a-cops counted.

While impersonating a rent-a-cop isn't illegal around here, if someone does call your bluff (like a real rent-a-cop) you can bet that they are going to take a dim view of your disgise and you'll only be asking for them to hit you with ever obscure law they can think of. With the multitude of other great disguises available I'd strongly recommend against using the security guard disguise.

If you're young you can work the "college student" angle since you can come up with some goofy class assignment excuse for almost any location.

Also, if you dress up a little bit, a clipboard with some company letterhead and maybe a chart with lots of meaningless checkboxes goes a long way towards making you look important.

As always, with any bluff you need to be prepared with what you're going to do if someone calls it. By just roaming in your street clothes you can always play innocent like Ninj usualy does and probably get off with a warning when caught. But if you're all dressed up then you're raising the stakes on getting caught by the wrong person.

Personally, I really like the "Industrial Photography" business cards and I'm going to order some tonight. "State Farm Insurance Adjuster" is also a good one (insurance adjusters are everywhere) but once again you have to be careful not to get your bluff called.

GET FREE BUSINESS CARDS: www.vistaprint.com
I've used them and they're good.

I use to be a security guard... I still have the uniform and the jacket as well... I could totally get away with wearing it, and I've thought about it a few times....

One of these days I'll bring my jacket along and wear it out hehehe... too bad I still don't have my Security License card.... or maybe I do...hmmm have to find that damn thing... heheheh then I've got actual proof The perfect outfit.

Thats not natural, but we got pills for that. We're dedicating all our resources to keeping the old guys erect but we're puttin people in jail for smoking something that grows in the dirt.

My biggest worry, as unlikely as it is, is running into the person you are impersonating.

"Hi, I'm an insurance adjuster"
"Really? So am I."

Unlikey, crappy, but sort of funny.

I actually ordered my business cards from vista print. They were these exact ones:

http://www.vistaprint.com/vp/ns/text_ls.asp?cid=63369,1726,1

I just set it up as an industrial photographer, and I can just say that I work freelance, so theres really nowhere they can check with to verify it. =D

I haven't used the lineman outfit yet for UE, and I doubt I will, but I imagine that it wouldn't be illegal unless I actually told someone that I was a lineman, which I wouldn't do. If I were to wear it, I would just use it in hopes that nobody would disturb me, and if they did I would probably say something like "Oh, I'm just checking something out real quick, I'll be done in a few minutes" where I imply that I work for the phone company, but never explicitly say so.

You just gotta be carefull what you do where, you can't get away with impersonating someone at a place that everyone knows each other, it's crucial to do some research beforehand.

The business cards are a great idea. I ordered some, but created a fake Location Services company, and made myself an "Assistant Location Scout." Location scouts are the guys that find suitable spots for shooting movies outside of a studio.

I'm wondering how far I should go in this disguise. I found a place where you can get ID badges made, at a relatively low cost (though it will get cheaper if you can find others to split the cost with), and made sure the the domain name that I used on the business card was untaken. I have a feeling this is a little overboard, but I could still find some uses for having a bulletproof disguise.

Awesome, Nemo. Definitely something I would NOT want to see while randomly UEing.

RHS has personal gas-masks, goggles, and hard-hats, for all our disguise needs. We also have a lot of weird crap that comes from Dumpster Diving, like a fire-hazard suit. (I kid you not.)

>_< Mochi, and each dive takes about 3 hours total.
