It has nothing to do with freezeing. Most thugs wouldnt know how to freeze a lock if there life depended on it. What is really happening is a good swift whack on the side of nearly any ball bearing padlock will free it up no problem. Well on the cheaper locks which are plentiful. Moral of the story, dont buy a cheap lock.

Ball bearing locks will not budge if you hit them on the side, those locks are generally more pricey. Locks that have spring loaded latches however will. IE when you hit it hard enough (and if the spring is weak enough) it will be thrown back momentarily. You have to pull up at just the right time though... if you keep a constant force up on the shackle it will bind the latch in place. For example, a 1500 American padlock. This lock is difficult to pick and has ball bearings, as well as a fairly sturdy body. On the other end we have the Masterlock #3. Very easy to pick, shim, bash on the side, crack with a crow bar, etc.

Edit: Forgot to add, some padlocks (most infact) have a lever/ball bearing that enters both sides of the shackle, so knocking it will not work (if you knock from one side the other side will still stay in place)

But you forgot that all locks no matter who makes them, can be picked with a torch. Not that I advise this, but it is a fact that metal melts.

Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite.
