| | | Carpet: works on most razor wire and ALL barbed wire. However, it sticks out like a sore thumb, so don't leave it there or it may be gone when you run back to it in full-retreat. Imagine my surprise as I learned that the hard way. Note that razor wire will sometimes make removal of the carpet EXTREMELY difficult -- like a big red flag to rent-a-cops. Belts: http://www.actiongear.com/ (ignore that campy guy on the main page) has some tactical vests that have two concealed-candy pouches at the waist. Cheap, tough, and fairly practical for lightweight gear. Since most camera packs don't have a good place for water bottles and flashlights... These folks also sell kevlar helmets! Knives: 3.25" folding Puma "Handic". These are indestructible, hold a good edge, and you can field-dress an elephant with it. If the knife is for self-defense, forget it. Attacks almost always come from behind and to those who explore alone (Darwinian behavior). Carrying a weapon for self-defense will either be unnecessary weight or it will give some idiot a new weapon. Alpha-dog attitude and/or numbers are your only defense in urban settings. Or, you can bring your two, well-trained, 120-lb German shepherd dogs with their kevlar boots. They like to explore too, and they afford a plausible excuse when the cops question you; "I'm sorry officer, I was just walking my puppies. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be inside the bank vault.....blah blah blah." No cop wants to interrogate a guy with two giant GSDs in-tow. Of course they limit your climbing abilities -- but you don't need to fear a crack-head or three when you have friends like these with you. Anybody else ever bring a dog along? Ne'er mind -- that should be another thread.
