To what degree are rats a problem when exploring underground? Are they agressive ?

We have very few rats in our drains (despite the stereotype), and very few in abandoned buildings and what not. In fact, in my experience there are more rats above ground than below. However, it may be different for other countries.

As far as them being aggressive, all the ones I have come across have dashed for a hiding place when we near because they're scared of us.
Some may carry diseases and stuff, but I don't know much about that...

If you ask me, they really aren't a problem unless you have a phobia of them (not uncommon).

I agree with Freemason. Rats really aren't as much of a problem as they seem like they should be. Closest thing to a rat I've come upon was a beaver in a drain... but the little guy just wanted to get away.

Life is a series of calculated risks... I've always sucked at math.

I've only run into rats in building crawlspaces. They don't like people or light though, so (like Freemason said) if you see a rat at all it'll probably be running away. I've had to crawl through piles of rat shit though, that can be unpleasant.

I don't know that you HAD to crawl through it... you could have just said, ah whatever and gone home! lol, I know I wouldn't be the one down there crawling through that stuff.

I have two rats sitting next to me right now. Problems include random squeaking noises in the middle of the night, and chewed-off shoelaces.

Aside from pets though, rats in buildings don't ever seem to be a problem. They are timid, they will run away from you, not like in movies where they all come in a giant herd and eat you alive.

In some cities rats are more used to people and won't hesitate to come into a room to try and steal a snack.

I wouldn't worry about it while exploring though. They only way a rat would ever hurt you would be if you tried to pick it up - and good luck trying to do that, they'll be gone like a little bolt of lightning before you even come near them.

Rats need food, usually provided by humans.

Rats typically arent a problem, usally they just run for cover and hide. And in all my years of exploring ive never heard of a rat attacking someone. ALthough them running away and squeaking can give away your postion.

All the rodents I've seen while exploring (rats, squirrels, mice, etc) run away when they spot a human. When I was in MN I tried coaxing a big sewer rat to eat some pretzels so I could get a picture of him, but he hid in a pipe.

If they're used to humans they can be a problem, like the huge squirrels in urban parks that will beat you up for your lunch.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

I've only ever seen one rat while exploring. All I say was it's big, round, rat ass as it ran away down a storm tunnel. Racoons on the other hand get aggressive...

I once saw a ROUS (rodent of unusual size) while driving around the quiet, industrial south terminal of the Vancouver airport with a friend one night. I was driving slow and we saw what we thought was a beaver or something similar since there are waterways everywhere there. When we realized it was a rat we were so amazed, and a bit scared. The thing was so big it's top speed was about half a mile an hour and was wobbling from side to side. It was kind of entertaining. Although our only light was from my headlights I would guess the body was around 18 inches long. Think of the movie Princess Bride. That's my rat story.

i saw a rat in one of the tunnels i was exploring last weekend, it just ran away from me though.

i also woke up with a rat in my bed this morning, but she's a pet. A pet who has learned how to open the latch on her cage.
