The Monarch Mine

Maybe this is not exactly for the main forum but I think it will be of much interest to all explorers everywhere.

ReduxZero has published his article on the Monarch Mine not far from Calgary. It is just a few minutes from the Lake Louise Ski Resort.

http://drainsofmycity.com/miscpics2/MonarchMine.pdf

This article features a very small portion of the South Monarch mine. The mines are 2 (there are unconfirmed reports of a 3rd) separate mines that are on opposite sides of the Kicking Horse Valley. The north mine takes about 8 hours to explore if you are quick. Most people take 2 trips to see most of it. The south mine is as yet not fully mapped or explored.

It is the site that got me into organized UE. After 2 years of exploring it with friends informally I decided to take it to the world online and the rest is history. UEA was founded with this being the first traget.

The mine to me is a world class site and I know Slim Jim from Action Squad and several other visiting explorers agree. I am always glad to see how much other explorers enjoy what I think is my biggest contribution to the UE community.

This article exemplifies why I think ReduxZero is in the top 10 of explorers in my book. Not only is he a motivated explorer but he gives us all credibility and always manages to capture the essence of ue to me.

The UEA mission reports and pics are here:

http://uea.ca/default.php?sname=http://www.uea.ca/drains/drains.php?dname=Monarch%20Mine

With the current turmoil at UEA much of the pics and reports are not currently online but my content is all up.

I have many a time wondered if the mines could not be a big draw for the growning UE tourism industry

That's me on the front page! ;)

BTW, Skaught, I think you meant that that's a small part of the *south* mine, as that is where we went on that trip... as far as I am aware, Reduxzero has never been in the north mine, unless he went there after that trip (which I doubt).

But yeah, awesome mine, largest underground space I've ever seen, and I'm definitely making a return trip before the month is through.

Yeah, that's definitely the south mine : )

Darnit, now my "article" (as yet unwritten) on it is going to look rather late to the game indeed.

Still waitin' to see those pictures of yours, Kowalski! I didn't get any photos of the wooden slide, because I knew I'd never beat the one you got.

Thanks for the praise, Skaught. I'm happy just knowing people actually take the time to read this and appreciate it. The Monarch Mine was absolutely incredible; and I hope the article will give all the readers out there some impression of what it was like.

Yeah, that photo was pretty flukey and mostly thanks to Underneath's flash work. You got a lot of great photos of other areas of the mine that I didn't try to shoot at all. One of those things where I got so wrapped up in the exploring of it that I didn't want to stop to try to shoot things with too little light. I *have* to get a good flash soon.

I'll have a feature article with my photos up when my site relaunches around the end of the month.

Man, you guys've got bigger balls than me! I'm all up for some abandoned factory action and maybe some cursory mine exploration, but you guys went all out on this place! I'm impressed.

If you don't want it known, don't say it on a phone.

As the very first explorer to enter it with only a newb partner I was scared shitless. But everytime I visted it I got more confidence. Now it does not faze me one little bit.

I have had ladders break under my weigght and seen a small rock or two fall from the ceiling but the place overall is pretty safe. Climbing the mountianside to the mine has casued more injuries.

It feels kinda cozy in there now.

On that mission I was on with you, Rev, it got a little freaky when that rock fell down the shaft and hit the lever on the old pipe causing the waterworks to rumble to life. There were dodgy bits too, but very well worth it. I wouldn't want to get overconfident in a place like that. A little bit of fear is a healthy thing because it makes for caution.

From a lot of years of experience in some pretty sketchy places, i've gotta say, Cozy = overconfidence = trouble...

I would agree with that. I (stupidly) wore shorts when I went, and I got really scraped up climbing the mountain (loose rocks slicing open my shins), but once inside the mine, I didn't sustain any injuries at all. Thank god for the hardhat, though ;)

For those who have explored the Monarch Mine: Perhaps you might wish to plan a trip here someday?

Heck, almost any explorer here would drool over this place.

being the first one down the endless stairway was intense.
232 (give or take a half dozen) 2by4 rungs, angled at about 75 degrees, spaced 12-14 inches apart.

woulda been a looong fall.

Walk away.
