| | | I never said that, and if for some reason there was feeling that I did, or that I was implying it... I was not. The USMC (United States Marine Corps) Made the MARPAT for use with the Marines, the US Army has shown interest in it. I know they are 2 diferent groups, but its like canada we have the Canadian Armed Forces, that covers everything to do with the military, similar to I assume the United States Military

| | | Canada has a much more 'purple' military in that the services blend together a lot more than the US services. There are pros and cons to this; pros include the fact that joint ops can be simplified; cons include the increased difficulty of specialization. Although in the US lots of joint work is done, the services are very distinct... even though the USMC is under the Dept of the Navy, it is autonomous to the degree that it is recognized as a totally separate service (in fact, on the joint chiefs of staff emblem, there are 4 sabers - one for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines). The services are separate enough that even though in the past they used the same BDU uniforms, they were acquired under totally separate contracts for each service. Thus you can sometimes notice small differences between otherwise identical regular-camo uniforms from different services. I know for a fact that the US Army will not be using the Marines' camo, although it is true that its effectiveness has inspired them to create their own. Hence the new Army uniform, with green/tan/gray that will work in a variety of environments. It is also to be made of a more durable fabric, the suit is a different cut, and it will feature more logically placed pockets as well as a mandarin-style collar that can be turned up to protect the neck from the sun. I'll try to dig out examples of all the new camo that the different US services will be using shortly. It's actually pretty interesting (except for that dumb new blue USAF camo).

| | | Here we go. New Army uniform:
Notice its different cut and color combination from the USMC uniform. The Army uniform only has green, tan, and grey - no black. New Air Force uniform: I do not like the new blue pattern. It may work marginally well in urban environments, but will probably only be useful in the woods or desert during the twilight hours around dusk and dawn. The Marines have 2 different digital patterns: one for woodland, one for desert. By the way on the ones I have seen, the eagle/globe/anchor is a lot more distinct than the one in Conundrum's example above. I suspect that the picture/compression or something reduced the quality.

| | | but like I mentioned before, the Airforce has already said that the new pattern isn't to provide camo abilities, they just wanted their own look. Oddly enough, when I was overseas last year, the Greek army (I think it was the army, it might've another branch) was wearing a similar pattern to the Airforces, with the blue thrown in there.... On that same note, the US Navy is about to test a new uniform. My ship got chosen as one of the testing grounds. I voluntered to test it out, but I doubt I'll get chosen (only 60 people out of 1500 are going to be wearing it, so it'll probably go to the fucking chiefs and officers). No one has seen this new uniform, but we're all guessing it's a BDU style uniform.

| | | @ Scourge...the army issues most helo pilots with a Nomex BDU these days. The pants have extra pockets down near the shins and the top has a pen pouch on the sleeve. The Guard unit that ferries us around wears them. Mark will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most AF pilots wear either a solid khaki or OD flight suit, terrain dependent. I have some of the old Canadian camo. It's very dark and I like it a lot. The new stuff is pretty damn effective though.

| | | For the Canadian airforce we get olive green or khaki nomex/kevlar/teflon flightsuits (yes i have no idea why they are made out of so many different materials). They have 1 tricep pocket, 2 chest, 2 waist, 2 thigh clips (for papers and such), 1 thigh knife pocket (its the optimal postion if you need to get your knife to cut yourself out of straps), 2 ankle pen/pencil, and finally 2 large ankle pockets. I probably even forgot some of them, and im not getting into the flight jackets we are issued. putting them on is like an adventure everytime, its like "so thats where i put that damn thing".

olive green or khaki nomex/kevlar/teflon flightsuits, well heres my reasoning nomex = Fire Retardant kevlar = Bullet Resistant / durable teflon = non stick?

| | | Actually i think the teflon is for water proofing, they were to cheap to use gortex (bastards). Also i know what all the materials do, just not why there are so many different materials in one piece of clothing, i mean the new flightsuits are more expensive then some of the aircraft we use.

I can get real MARPAT pretty easy. There's a bunch of places online that sell knock offs. I've never seen CADPAT in the states. But I've seen plenty of knock offs of that stuff online too.

Yeah that's true, I wear one almost every day. OD color ratty old flight suit. I think they would do well to have camo on them though. In the USAF, you rip the knife pocket off the flight suit, you rip the cover tab off the pen pocket on the tricep, and you put an unauthorized mini-patch up there. At least most pilots do that.

[/quote] Well in the CF the tricep pocket is square with a zipper and quite useful, and the kinfe thigh pocket is sewen in incredibly well (therefore impossible to tear out, seeing as it would cause a hole in the leg of flightsuit). Also its damn useful, ive had to cut myself a few times out of straps (damn unreliable canadian aircraft).

| | | The tricep has a pocket with a zipper plus two small sleeves for pens (there are 2 more on the lower right pant leg but I do not see them frequently used). The tricep pocket has a velcro flap on the outside that you can use to cover up the pens. Most people rip this off to make the pens easier to get to, and this leaves a velcro tab to affix small 2x1 inch unauthorized patches. The actual pocket on the tricep is below, and it's small but useful. I imagine when going to combat the knife pocket is left on so you can actually keep a knife in there. Handy item in a variety of situations.
