Are UE'ers more curious?
< on 7/31/2004 6:43 PM >

For years I had been driving by this site - I was always intrigued by the radar station. This summer I took a closer look and wrote up a web page:

Web page here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kazil/radar.html - It's not a world shattering expedition, but still very satisfying. Next time I drive by, I can say to myself : "I know what this is, I've been there."

My point:
While doing research on the web I realized that no one had written about this site. It has been here for 20 years or more. Daily tens of thousands of people see it. And no one is curious enough to write about it?

  • Are UE'ers more curious than most folk?
  • Would you be curious enough to take a closer look ?

'course we're more curious that most folk, thats why we explore in the first place.
Whenever I drive by something interesting, I always stop to check it out, time permitting. Thats how my group finds most of the places we've explored to date

Hi all,

Most definitely we're more curious than most. As you said, most drive by as if blind, yet a few dont......

So yes urban explorers ARE more curious!

I'm often surprised at the lack of info on certain sites when I'm researching, it just amazes me that no one seems to know or care about the history of things around them (for example, somewhere under my campus is an abandoned "practice mine" from the university's first days as the Alaska School of Mines, but the people in the mineral engineering department don't even know about it).

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Certainly we are more curious but you also have to think about the subject matter. Other people may be just as curious but about different things. Afterall, we are talking about the curiosity involved with strange buildings on the urban landscape which is what our hobby is about. So I think it's safe to say that since we are here on UER we would all be more curious about old buildings than an average joe.

Of course U.E'rs are more curious...their hobby is getting out and exploring. They are attracted to places that are off limits, hard to access and challenging sometimes. It's the UE way of life...to be curious.

i totally think we are more curious, but also most of us don't have as high a regard for the trespassing law as most people and for that reason our curiosity not only stays passive as many other people's do but we do something about it...but i also think that besides being very curious we pay more attention to detail than most people which causes us to see the subjects of our curiosity as subjects when just driving by when many other people would just think of it as another building on the side of the road and not even notice it's abandoned

if you're gonna send someone to save the world, make sure they like it the way it is first

Symptoms of starting UE:
- looking whether doors that say "private" or "personell only" are locked, and if found open, walking trough with a look as if you're lost
- only looking at shop windows if the shop is closed - or closed down
- always reading the text on manhole covers
- In an unknown building, knowing the utility cabinet before knowing the toilet
- occasionally exclaiming in neighbourhood that are "horribly ugly" to normal people; "It's so beautiful here"
- one word: detours
- ...

Well...

I'm not so sure... Of course we are curious - but no more curious then the next person... Just for different things; buildings, drains etc etc

My brother couldn't care less about UE... At all; yet you can see some of the best write ups online from him about how an ATX power supply works and how to get an Apple iMac into a PC case.

Why ?

He was curious.

Just not about buildings.

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Liz and I were really surprised when we had to take some people who'd lived in Rochester all their lives on their first visit to the Rochester subway. They said, "We always heard about this place, but we've never gotten around to checking it out." To me, and probably to most explorers, this simply does not compute.

I'd say we are overall more curious.

I've been in areas where my eyes have been agog at the amount of stuff that at could at least be recced, yet my companions don't even bat an eyelid....

Yeah, I would say for a fact that I am more curious than the average person. When I was younger, about 7-8 years old, I always asked questions nobody asked like "How does a pop machine work?" or "What is the function of a sump pump?" Yeah, it sounded a little geeky, but when I saw my first abandoned building when I was 10 the first thing I asked my dad was "What is in there?" and "What are they going to do with it?" So yeah, I think I speak for all of us when I say that yes, we are more curious folk.

You'd love some of the old victorian stuff over here then mate!

Such as:

http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=20355
http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=20339

and specifically in England:

http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=20906
http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=20754

Good stuff. Always amazes me how clever the Victorians were when it came to building stuff.. Not like the cheap, nasty carboard box junk that is thrown up today!
