| | | One of my passions with photography is working with traditional film media, almost a year ago now I picked up my first 4x5 camera, a beatup, modified Speed Graphic, the classic 1940s press camera. While I could shoot the camera, scanning was an issue, the scanner an Epson V700 kept on being put on the backburner, until recently when I found one at a sweet price. While the idea of lugging around this camera and the nature of the hobby doesn't always go hand-in-hand...the results are nothing short of spectacular. 1.

| | | Wow I can't believe that old of a camera has such clarity. Nice !! You must lug a lot of gear for your explore. Like the last shot and #4 the best

Actually it's mostly in the lenses, I have two right now, a Kodak Ektar 203mm (65mm equivalent in 35mm/Digital Full Frame), it dates to the late 1940s, but the Ektar is a legendary lens. The other is a Schneider 90mm (28mm in 35/FX), it's a modern lens but also known for it's sharpness. Yeah, I need a bit of extra gear when shooting LF that can get a bit wearing.

Didnt know it was a lens. Sorry..Thanks for clarifying. I work with a GE X5 so its a fixed lens. I'm curious now as to how the DSLR's carry their equipment and keep it clean if switching lens. I will start a new thread for that

It wasn't an official sale, bought a floor model unit, pretty much New in Box, I know a store manager.

| | | Very nice collection of shots in this thread. Looks like it was absolutely worth it, and probably just as fun to shoot. Really diggin' 11 and 14 man. Good stuff.

| | | Nicely done. Those are good lens choices too. I have 2 speed graphics and 2 crown graphics plus about 3 or 4 other 4x5s. I take them exploring too. A SG with small lens can easily be handheld (assuming you have the rangefinder calibrated) and shot that way. Only about 5 lbs. Search out and use a Grafmatic if you can - it's an easier way to deal with sheet film than swapping doubledarkslide holders all the time. Keep up the good work!

| | | High school was the last time I had the opportunity to shoot with a Speed Graphic. We were all into the "high tech" 35mm cameras at the time so I didn't spend as much time with the larger format cameras as I should have. When it comes to film, there is no substitute for square inches. I have a twin lens Yashicamat sitting on my shelf that I keep telling myself that I am going to drag out and shoot with. Like everything else, there aren't enough hours in a day to find time for everything that I'm interested in doing. Great photos! Thanks for sharing them. Abby Normal

My Speed Graphic has been heavily modified so much that it no longer really counts as a press camera. However I do have my eye on a very minty Crown Graphic! Sadly I've only found Grafmatics in bad conditions and costing way too much, but I'll keep an eye out for sure!

So true.

Yep, I don't process it myself, I leave that to Toronto Image Works. [last edit 1/30/2014 1:25 PM by Axle - edited 2 times]
