| | First UE photography excursion < on 1/13/2014 7:40 PM >
| | | This past weekend I met up with some out of town fellow EU members to explore a couple sites in my town. Last month I got some real photography gear, spent a whole lot of time reading tutorials, reading books and magazines and reading these forums to figure out how to take a picture...so much for the point and shoot days. So this is the first time I went out with the goal of trying to take decent photographs. We hit a large abandoned warehouse and a steel mill, and with some great tips from my companions, this is what I came out with. Am I heading in the right direction? I know the styles are all over the place as I find myself experimenting a lot. Anyway, first off was a very large warehouse that is known locally as how government investment programs and business can go horribly wrong. 1. All locked up...except every other door is wide open

Next up was a steel mill that shut down about a year ago, very wet and dirty, but complete. Please excuse that some of these are HDR...experimenting

| | | Leaps and bounds better than my first stuff. What did end up getting ? Suggestions. Don't bother with hdr now. Focus on basics. Watch your highlights blowing out. I really like 2

| | | ^^^^^ that. and, like anything else in your life, the more you do it, the better you will get at it. these are good shots with some blowout (it happens)it can be removed or softened in PS. and yeah.... hdr.... no..... just go out and shoot more stuff. shoot a drag race, shoot a puppy in the snow, shoot everything around you. I took 6500 pics last year. maybe 25 are "wow" and less than 300 are good. but, looking back, you can see the improvement (at least i can).

| | | Thank you for the compliments and suggestions. OK, I will put away the HDR for now and focus on the basics working on composition and lighting. This stuff is super addictive. And randomesquephoto, I got a Canon T3i, remote shutter, bag, flashlights and a copy of 'access all areas' of course. It was a very good Christmas for me

| | | Nice job. Quick tip i tell my photo students...vary your angles, dont always shoot standing up. Shoot from low down on the floor, climb a box to get up high. Invest in a decent wide angle lens if you plan on doing lots of UE photos. Tokina 11-16, Sigma 10-20, Canon 10-22 are great and cheaper than the pro level Canon 16-35 - which is awesome, but over $1500. With a wide and a prime 50mm lens (f/1.8 or f/1.4 versions), you have a good, light setup for UE. The prime is key to play with depth of field and shoot in lower light Keep up the good work!
