Photo editing software

I've been shooting for a couple of years now, and I've been using the software that came with my Nikon to edit. It has some basic cropping and color editing and exposure and all that, what I want to do now is be able to cut pictures together. I tried to pirate Photoshop but it fried my hard drive, and don't have the money to get a legit version. What are my options for getting some software that will be able to cut things together, maybe layer them and color spot some of it? There's got to be an off brand software that isn't going to cost me $700.

This is what I started playing with. It's free ~ is that a fair price?

Free is actually a wonderful price! I'll try gimp when I get home to my computer late tonight, post a few of my more recent pictures once I'm at the hard drive. Thank you, kind sir.

You can get Photoshop & Lightroom (which is what I use) through a new subscription program for only $9.99/month. I personally don't have it but it's something I might do some time because I want to learn some Photoshop too. Anyway, it's definitely a great deal to try it out. Apparently it's based off a yearly subscription but you can cancel within the first 30 days if you don't like it.

a little Google Fu and a visit to ThePirateBay would likely furnish a pirated version of both Lightroom and Photoshop, if that's your thing.

I'd recommend not frying hard drives, I hear they don't taste great, they're much better baked.

You have to have a version of CS3+ in order to get that deal. Without having previously owning Photoshop the deal is much more

If you download trusted items from The Pirate Bay, nothing gets fried. Just don't go hog-wild and download every dadgum thing because it's free. Do you research, read comments and feedback, and you're fine.

I'm a full time photographer and 90% of my editing (whether it be live music, portraits and yes, urbex shots) are done with Adobe Lightroom.

The software is very easy to use and pretty flexible. Photoshop is nice, but I find it is way too big for my needs. Adobe created Lightroom for photographers and with photographers, and it uses the same algorithms that Photoshop uses.

The only thing missing for some of you urbex photographers is the HDR function. I don't HDR, so it's a non-issue for me.

Software runs around $150. It is sometimes on sale, just before the holidays you could pick it up for $70.

Versatile, easy to use, powerful... my go to software for sure.

My personal opinion is that the HDR function of Photoshop is trash. I don't use Photoshop for my HDR, but Photomatix. I've tried a few other programs as well, but Photomatix was my favorite for HDR.

Totally agree, the few times I've done HDR have been with Photomatix. Although I read that the CS6 Photoshop has a much improved HDR algorithm, but for specific applications like HDR, I prefer specific softwares

I haven't messed with it too much in CS6. I toyed with it a bit in CS5, but not since I upgraded. I think I'm too comfortable with Photomatix...creature of habit and all that.

We are all like that. I'm a fan of once I find a formula that works, why mess with it? Good to know what newer versions and softwares do, but I'm soooo not an upgrade whore. Still have an old iphone, Lightroom 4 and run Windows 7. Won't even mention my TV :p

no, I imagine that it'd be just fine so long as you read the comments on the given torrent you're thinking about using. tiffers' is right, if you use some caution you'll be fine. That's not to say I've never had to eradicate a virus obtained from a torrent downloaded through that site, so be aware.

Nothing i have used so far has come anywhere near the quality of lightroom. You can buy it for $80 if you're a student or $150 if you're not. Absolutely worth it if you do a lot of photography and have something against obtaining a free version... otherwise just download it.

For everyone who cited that Lightroom lacks an HDR function:
