Canyon Mines

Recently, I've been inspired by several great PSW mine explorers to check out some local mines.

That being said, I went with one of my buddies to a nearby canyon hoping to find a few mines. Fortunately, with a small amount of guidance from a few online sources, we were able to find and explore two mines.

Although these are by no means "difficult" mines (no vertical entries or drop offs), the aesthetic and historical aspects were very unique and enjoyable. These mines served as a great introduction to the hobby and have motivated me to continue with underground exploration.

This is the first, and perhaps more well known, mine.

The water was about 2 feet deep in the first section of the mine.

There were some awesome calcite formations, and "mine pearls" covered a large portion of the rocky floor.

Here's the second mine. There was some water at the entrance of this mine, although it was shallower than the first. The ceiling was actually quite high at points, and a constant dripping of water from the rock walls created a pleasant, rain-like sound.

This old, rusted pipe ran through the entirety of the mine, and rotting support beams were also found throughout.

Lastly, a few "artifacts".

SWEET! I love the mine pearls. We recently found some but not nearly as many as in your photo. That is amazing.

Thanks for sharing the photos!

Oh yeah, what's with the shorts? Is it warmer down there than it is up here in Vegas. It's wayyy too cold to wear shorts mine exploring up here.

I'm heading out on Friday / Saturday with my son to do some exploring. We are heading up towards Tonopah. Might just have to take him to the Mine Park up there. It's an amazing place.

Haha! Yeah, it was just about 80° out the day we went. We were actually wearing pants though (they're rolled up in the picture to avoid the water). We probably would have worn shorts if it weren't for the winter poison oak.

Sounds awesome! Your son is one lucky guy Make sure to post some pictures if you end up going

They're a type of calcite formation; so in my understanding, a cave/mine with an abundance of water forms these pearls when it can't support stalagmite formation. The calcium coated objects rotate in said water until they become nice and glossy/somewhat round.

Thanks for the kind words!

There's a rusty ore cart in one of them but you have to crawl a ways to get in.

Thank you! Wandering about all day without any concrete destinations allowed us to slow down, enjoy the hike, and feel incredibly accomplished once we found the hidden adits.

We ended up going. He really wanted to to use my DSLR so I turned it over to him and I used my point-and-shoot. I looked at his photos and he has a good eye. Unfortunately we found out that my sensor has some dust on it. Guess he is going to learn about photo editing too.

I spent a lot of time taking wide angle shots with the p-n-s and got some respectable shots. I'll post them in another thread in the next couple of days.

Oh yeah, although we did some mine exploring but most of our time was above ground. It was a great time with him.

No such thing as a bad mine explore. Thanks for the look.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Neat! (Seriously.)

Good explore. Is this a one-off, or are you veering off in the flightless-bird-who-shalt-not-be-named's direction? ;)

Edit: now read the "continuing". You should check out the "Vertical Ropework, Rappelling, and SRT" forum.

Haha! Thanks dtew!

Yeah, I'm an apprentice to the master I like to think he's somehow looking at this right now; proud of me

He actually sent me a bunch of PDF's from the forum you mentioned. Now I'm just waiting for him to return home in a few years.
Hopefully I'll be able explore some challenging/vertical mines before then, but it all depends on time, money, and ability (mostly money).

Thanks for the tip!

Nice pics. a good recommendation to all interested in exploring mines is to go expecting to deal with water. be prepared!

I wear keens, which is fine if you can convince yourself that the water is clean, but galoshes aren't a bad idea either.
