Salton sea explore and road trip.

It's been a long year with not as many explores under my belt as I would have liked. I mulled this over for a couple months trying to come up with a way to find the time to fix my craving for exploration while balancing family and work duties and decided:

Fuck the holidays, its time for a road trip.

Dtew, Seedy, Spacetimecurvature and I went about making plans as I had mentioned some interest in some Socal locations they had already been to. With a good deal of back and forth and a little "sorry I wont be home for thanksgiving" we set things up.

There is nothing more exciting to me than to see places I haven't been and explore locations off the beaten track. This trip was the perfect way to satiate my craving for fresh terrain as well as to get some much needed personal space and breathing room away from the over-populated bay area.

We stopped in Bakersfield to take a peek at the old PG&E plant that killed one man and badly injured a few other folks in separate demo accidents. This place was obviously very much pissed-off at getting demoed.

1.

Info on the demo accidents:

http://www.youtube...atch?v=5N-6EcnsmxU

From there we hit a mine/ore processing location in the hills outside Bakersfield. Despite the waning daylight this location turned out to be pretty cool.

2.

My first time using a rock as a tri-pod. Notice the twine in the tunnel on the left. I was told there were about 40 miles of tunnels at this site. Not the place to get lost in.
3.

We then left to hit up a well known location near Barstow and do a bit of low-light/no light photography.

4.

We then got to the hotel and I had the traditional pepperoni Hot pocket and copious amounts of brew for Thanksgiving dinner. The next day we were off to explore a rather odd location with a quick stop in Palm Springs for lunch.

This site was quit the attraction up until the 90's when they were forced to close. It was partially raining on us all day but we tried to make the best of it. I really liked this location and hope to come back soon.

After our soggy trip to the Xmas village we finally made our way out of the mountains and back into the desert to make camp at Salton sea. Arriving at dusk and while hastily setting up camp we watched the looming clouds and hoped for the best. We lucked out and as it cleared we decided to do a bit of night shooting and take advantage of the lack of light pollution this area is famous for. We went out on a nearby abandoned boat launch to see what we could capture.

15.

18.

The next day we woke up a bit hung-over and groggy but ready to hit up the infamous Bombay beach area. In its heyday this lake and the surrounding areas were a thriving resort community and a destination for the southern California folks to fish, water ski and relax. Unfortunately the salinity of the lake continued to increase since its accidental creation in 1905. Later on it flooded several times taking out parts of some communities on the shoreline. The area never fully recovered economically or for recreation. This is also the lowest community in America at 223 feet below sea level

No, its not a missile.

Shortly after this picture was taken a local crazy decided to start harassing one of our group so we decided it was time for lunch at the only place in town. Thankfully they had Fat tire on tap since it felt like it was 100 degrees out despite it being the end of November. I could not imagine what its like during the summer.

The next day before heading to the other side of the lake we made a stop at a local rancheria which was not previously boarded up (according to my compatriots). This locations days are definitely numbered.

25.

26.

On to Salton city, which was an even bigger mess than Bombay beach but with fewer crazy neighbors.

27.

28.

29.

30.

There will be more images coming from everyone who participated in the Salton explore so stay posted.

Huge thanks go out to Seedy, Dtew and Spacetimecurvature for showing this desert rookie around. Thanks for looking!

Looks like it was a great trip! #15-18 and #27 are my favorites. I want to pull up a tire in #17 and stare at that view for a long time.

I agree. Seeing the various sites in sequence gives an interesting outlook on the expansiveness of this road trip. From the forest to the desert, every location was certainly unique.

The photography is phenomenal; I like the blend of indoor/outdoor black&white/color, day/night, etc. Great diversity.

Thanks, I totally agree.

All nice, but #16 FTW.

Thanks eddy. If you look close you can see one of our crew in the bottom

It was a lot of driving but well worth it.

I want to pull up a tire in #17 and stare at that view for a long time.

I almost didn't work on this one but glad I did.

We take monday off for the drive.

I couldn't agree more.

That's some great stuff D. Sucks that I couldn't make it on this trip.

Lets start planning a spring trip. It would be even more fun with a larger crew.

Seriously an off the hook explore!

Thanks Abby. Glad you enjoyed the night shots!

Keep up the good work!

Glad you like it. Thanks for looking.

Thanks dude. I tried my best to share this explore as best I could.

Thanks very much Austtie. That compliment made my week.

Off to the Salton Sea from Vegas next week... can't wait.

This area really exceeded my expectations. Have fun!

Awesome shots Dtew. The detail and clarity in 3, 5 and 7 are amazing. I especially love the house of mirrors shot. Can't wait to see Seedy's and STC's images.

Re-posting, since I managed to finish PP'ing this set (exceeding expectations), and therefore can put them in order. And a new post buys myself 24 hours to add text. Sorry for the lack of organization, folks.

There's probably >90% that's unexplored/unphotographed, ranging from freshly/maybe-abandoned homes (my photos 14 & 15; we joked that the owner was possibly at the local bar, and here I am "exploring" this "abandonment"), to full-out ninja projects (aircraft boneyards, bomber carcasses in the middle of bombing ranges, etc.)

We're always constrained by itinerary and time, never possibilities. Some people make it a personal project.
