| | Alternatives to flashlights? < on 12/6/2013 6:17 PM >
| | | Can anyone recommend an alternative to flashlights for videoing? I did a search on here but didn't find what I was looking for. I'm starting to video more and some places are so dark I need more light. However I'm not happy at all with using flashlights. Some have the infamous dark spot in the middle you can't get rid of, some don't provide enough light, etc. I need something that I can carry with my left hand while videoing with my right hand that lights up the area fairly well. Any ideas? Thanks!

| | | Yeah, that's what I was kind of thinking... something an auto mechanic might use for a light.

DAMN I want that. Sucks that it won't fit on a Sony shoe.
|
You can still use the handle option. It is pretty light weight and the barn doors let you control the spread pretty easy. Even without the shoe mount it is worth it, IMO.

| | | http://www.amazon....keywords=energizer i just bought this last week and tried it out in a local cave, its pretty damn bright and the light spreads really evenly also it has a dimming function so you can choose the brightness.

Why not? Your camera doesn't have a hot shoe? I have one of these and they're really good. But you are still going to have one part of the video illuminated the the rest will fall off. I've been thinking about shooting some stuff as well at the moment and I am having the same issues. Problem with me is I want to walk through stuff and give the impression of what it is like when I am down there exploring. I think I might try to get a few carbide lamps and fire them up, crank up the settings and try that. I much prefer the warmer tones of the carbide to the LED, and I can then use LED i the backgrounds to try and create some interesting colour casts. The mechanics pole looks good too. One other option, but now we're starting to talk about crazy self made rigs... I would like to get 3M strip lights and stick them to a large square or circular frame which I would then encase my camera within. Creating a soft, but even, spread of light.

That would be called a lens light or ring light, also a good alternative, but they are more useful for macro or close portraits.

That is similar to what I was thinking. A torch would be great also.

| | | Just something kinda cool to do, take a tv remote, aim it at your camera, press any buttons on the remote, and your camera should show the infared light as a purple light. As some people have been suggesting (I think, if the lights they're showing are IR), infrared light while normally invisible to the naked eye does show up in video, so it's also stealthy cause nobody can see the light, but it still illuminates the video. Makes it perfect as you will help all the cameras in the area see you and of course night vision but most cctv not that regular light wont though. red light is always best for being stealth at anything in the dark [last edit 12/7/2013 4:53 AM by Evilbunny - edited 1 times]
