the mecca of ghost towns! (IMHO, of course)

in 1986, a series of mistakes led to the worst nuclear power disaster in history. the level 7 event, one of only two, spit radiation all around the world. the event was initially concealed and was only acknowledge after the Swedes detected contamination on their clothing that they confirmed did not come from their plants.

only a few hours notice was given to the residents of the working town, Pripyat, and they were told only a two-three day evacuation was needed. 27 years later, i got to visit the town that has been uninhabited since that time, although there are two shops in operation there (a car repair shop for trucks/cars that work in the exclusion zone and a laundromat for contaminated closing in the region as well).

i'm going to post a few pictures here, but i can't post the majority of pictures as my state-employed guide has noted that the Ukranian government searches out the source of such pictures and guides are routinely fired/punished for allowing visitors access to certain places. maybe when i'm a full member i will post the *really* awesome pictures.

i did a two-day, overnight tour in Pripyat and Chernobyl. chernobyl is still an operational, albeit small, city. pripyat? we were the only people there both days. a private tour, just myself and the girlfriend. absolutely amazing.

There isn't one of those pics that i don't like. Nice job.

same location, Pripyat, Ukraine, but definitely not the same group. i went on a private tour instead of a group to get access to many more locations that you can't get access to with groups.
