| | St Georges Asylum - Morpeth 2013 < on 10/29/2013 6:53 PM >
| | | Well, seeing as the Lancaster Moor is off the cards now, St Georges is my closest English Asylum for paying a wee visit. It just so happens that I had a training course in Newcastle and I was finishing at three. I deliberately booked the late train home and went for a five hour explore of somewhere I dont understand why it doesnt show up more often. Lets face it, it isnt that hard to get in. Security are on the ball but not any harder to bypass than every other asylum in the UK. Wandering up on my own I spotted the security bloke in his HiVis a mile off, crouching down amongst the trees, I waited for him to pass, observing his behaviour then made my move. There she sleeps......
Approaching the fence I realised there was a dog walker in the field I had just crossed who was watching me so I kept on walking before doubling back and waiting out of sight until they vanished. A quick climb up and over into the relative safety of the Airing Courts. This fantastic image shows the scale of the beast
For this visit I decided to concentrate on the Female Side/West Wing and the central units after ,y last visit was spent predominantly on the Male Side of the asylum. A good hour or two was spent roaming the corridors, trying to get corridor shots I can be happy with. The ones below are my best attempts This corridor leads down the west side of the Main Hall towards the Doctors Flats
And this one leads the other way back towards Admin on the Eastern Side
Then this one leads into the dark, dingy depths of the Female Side of teh Asylum
From what I understand the Female Side closed first, around 2002 (ish) And it shows, its so much further gone than the equivalent rooms o the Male Side. Still I did find a particular gem amongst this row of cells
After checking each cell one by one for any evidence of previous paddedness, I found the final one to be what I was looking for. Sadly almost all trace of its original use has long been removed, BUT they forgot to take the clear double door fittings away. You can see here the much heavier duty internal door fixtures.
And a view back out
Fantastic, normally they remova all evidence. Moving on to the wards themselves, a few nice shots were in order. Love the dividers they use in here and the crazy ceiling stuff too.
Cells at the end
Then up to even more
No trip to St Geos is worth it without a quick visit to the Angel..... this was me living up to my username
Before a quick out the window shot after I waited silently for ten minutes whilst Security ambled around outside
This ward at the rear of teh West Wing has almost totally had it....
From here I made my way back to the centre. Sadly aside from the hall and the chequered ceiling, its a very ordinary site. Nothing spectacular but at the same time pretty grand in an odd way. The Hall
A few random shots in order now because I like 'em Female Cloakroom
Love this little engineers station area
The Morgue ..... some day .....
Theatre
Stuff
Whilst in here I spotted Security doing another round, as it was getting dark and I had a train to catch, I started to pack up
wasnt it nice of them to tell me where my exit was.......
Well that concluded my trip, a safe exit was made and I traipsed the mile back to the station before dozing off for my journey home Enjoy folks.
