Starting at Hicks Road would be the place to start, but you're on a private road, there are nasty hillbilly types up there that will put a gun in your face if they can, and they do watch and patrol the road. Not recommended. Only other options for climbing up there are bushwhacking through poison oak.

I think I'll choose poison oak

There's an obvious old route from the top of El Sombroso to Mt Thayer and Ununhum. I've been on at least half of it that is 'passable'.

You would start at Hicks where there's a small parking area for Sierra Azul. Woods Tr is nice, but it's a fairly strenuous climb. You'd have to be into hiking as much as, or more than the exploring. Just before the top you would find the route to the left/south. Check it out on google: http://goo.gl/maps/kMz56

I'd bring some loppers and plan to not make it the first time. The southern end of the trail looks to be heavily overgrown. A mountain bike would make the return trip into a fast and furious 10 minutes.

I was thinking just following mt umunhum rd up barlow road then hiking through the brush to the back of the summit as i'll be coming in from the quick silver park (public transit) I would rather stay out of the road as much as possible I assume none of you have been up there then?

someday when you are full member you will be able to read the stories and see the pictures from some of the best explorers that the PSW has. I read thru one of their archived threads and the DB entry last friday night, one of the better reads on this site. some of the ppl who shared stories were actually stationed and lived in quarters on some of these bases in the 70's and 80's

I think you've never been up there. You cannot hike through that kind of brush. It's miles to the top. Even the route I suggested will be very difficult, and it's only about a mile and half-cleared. Woods Tr is not "the road". It's open and legal and will get you up to very near the top in terms of elevation.

You can drive up the road and look around. Go up and check out what the brush is like.

Edit: Ok, I see that there are some areas up there that are not covered in scrub, like I was thinking about. Hmm...

Was right about to go but found this update Officials note that anyone trespassing at the summit now will be arrested; security guards patrol it 24-7. need to rethink it now.

There are also radio towers over in San Rafael by China Camp. Friends and I used to check them out all the time in HS. They are neat and worth checking out. Low/ no security.

???!!

I'm guessing you're referring to the Nike SF-93 IFC site in San Rafael's Harry Bargier Park, & the remaining RADAR pads there. Low/no security because they're in an open municipal park, though it's a trudge to get up there if you're a sucker that can't social-engineer a vehicle gate code.

Finally got around to visiting SF-88C on New Years. Turns out a large group of revelers had the same idea. Terrible saxophone music (skill-wise) wafted by as I wandered the buildings.
