| | New to UER < on 10/13/2013 1:23 PM >
| | | Hey all! I got into urbex way back in 2008 with an accidental explore of Mahencha Apartments in Gary Indiana. From there it was a pleasant hobby for several years that fueled my interest in photography, but in the past year and half (and the discovery of a couple of amazing-to-me locations) my friend and I have gotten the bug. At this point I'm not sure there is anything left in Gary that I haven't seen other than residential locations and we've been circling out looking for new places and possibly new people to explore with so this seemed like a good resource to join. So greeting and well met, fellow explorers! Perhaps I'll be seeing some of you around Gary or Chicago sometime soon.

| | | I was just in Gary on Friday. I broke my "new buildings explored in a day" record. I like your town.

| | | Welcome to the forum! If your going to be in this hobby, you cant live in a much better place then Gary. Just go for a walk, and walk into whatever building looks cool pretty much in some area's.

| | | I absolutely LOVE Gary. Been through the buildings a million times but still never get bored with them. They are the ideal of decimated structures.

| | | I'm new too. I live in Indianapolis and Gary is always mentioned as kind of a scary place to be out here. Run into any sketchy situations? I would love to check it out though since it seems to have one of the highest abandoned building numbers in the country next to Detroit. Nice to meet you maybe if I'm up that way you could show me around some time, I could help you hit some places here if you don't know them already.

| | | Been out to Gary a half dozen times. And always have an awesome time. The locals are much friendlier there then in my own town.

Not really, I have some nice conversations with ladies leaving church, met a very nice older homeless man squatting in one of the apartment buildings and the most unpleasant people I've ever met have been the portrait photographers with their yuppie clientele who won't ever return a friendly greeting. We go fairly often, I'll PM you the next time we make plans for there.

Thanks, we're considering a weekend trip sometime early next year. I have friends in the area but would love to meet up. We do need to finish seeing Packard! I hear it has been sold and they're actually talking renovation rather than demo. Doubt it'll happen but it is the better option.

I don't believe the buyer paid up.

It's supposed to be going to the third highest bidder now. Some guy from Peru. He has a stellar track record of redevelopment. I still don't think anything will ever happen with the property, but I guess we will see.

| | | I'm not going to hold my breath for anything to change at Packard any time soon. The amount of money it would take to demo or renovate that place, coupled with the economy and location means that the chances are very good nothing much will come of it having a new owner. At the same time I'd like to get out there soon and poke around some more, I feel like I always see more clearly the second time through a location. My 'sploring buddy didn't believe me when I told him we'd need a day or more to see this place so we ended up only seeing about half of it. Perhaps this spring I'll be back to Detroit for a weekend visit, Packard one day and who knows what else the other. Minus the day we got run off by cops at one location and the car was broken into at another our last trip to Detroit was simply amazing and exhausting good times. I was just sad when we realized we really should have explored Grand Central last time we were there. (Actually, except for Packard, everything on my "pre-scout" list was sealed up tight or had active crews on the grounds. Good thing there is so much in the area to see!)

I've run into them too. Ironically, I think they're members here too.
