Eureka Springs, Arkansas is an eclectic town that draws all types of characters—from the devoutly religious to the biker set. Named for its natural spring which claims to have healing powers. Downtown is full of eccentric shops, cafés and spas. Hotels run the gamut from the sparse to the luxurious and everywhere in between. Lush, untouched natural wonders entice even the non-outdoorsy folks to come out and play.

There is an energy here.

Maybe it’s from its past as a retreat for wealthy vacationers seeking health and wellbeing in a serene natural playground. Or the quack doctors looking to profit off these people. It is home to one of the most infamous haunted hotels. http://www.crescent-hotel.com/The Crescent Hotel was “Where Sick Folks Get Well”, but the leaders of the ghost tour tell otherwise. A hospital/hotel, you say? Yeah, definitely haunted.

Or maybe the energy comes from that time when the town served as a pit stop for the Indians journeying along the Trail of Tears. Or that it has been proud host to The Great Passion Play for 45 years. http://www.greatpassionplay.org/Seems the play is struggling with a decline in attendance--its seven-story Christ of the Ozarks statue is now in foreclosure.

In Eureka Springs there are numerous abandonments like this one. Probably due to the hippie, live-and-let-live vibe this place has going on. I chose to explore the Joy Motel because it was conveniently located directly across the street from the hotel where I was staying.

6. Outdated marketing materials boast the “biggest pool in town”:

7. Not sure what sort of fine print allowed them to get away with saying that.

8. By the looks of these pipes, this pool hasn’t been operational in quite some time—and won’t be again anytime soon.

9. Yep…..that’s a turtle.

The most recent date I found on site was July 2011. But internet research shows the property may have been occupied as recently as summer 2012. Online reviews tell the tale of a sad decline from funky chic to just funky gross.

15. Meanwhile, in the front office it looks like the caretakers just stepped away for lunch (if you can look past that crap falling out of the ceiling).

Check out some of the reviews on this place—sounds like it looked this way even while guests were still paying to stay there!

Nice set. Sounds like the place was just a total dump toward the end.
