About RAW..

So as I advance in my amateur photography journey, I started shooting in RAW instead of Jpeg and can see why its so amazing in post processing. That leaves me with the question, is there any reason to shoot anything in jpeg if RAW looks so damn good? What do you shoot in?

Also, I was thinking about dabbling in HDR a bit. Now my camera doesn't have auto bracketing (d3200) But I was reading that you can use a single RAW file to create an HDR photo by creating the exposures via lightroom. So which method gets the best HDR image, RAW or bracketing? Or maybe there isn't a difference?

I shoot in Raw all the time b/c I like to edit my photos instead of the camera doing it. Jpeg is good if your shooting something that you dont care about post processing. There was one time I forgot to put my camera in Jpeg and I had 400 pictures I had to post process.

As for HDR, a true HDR requires 3 or more frames. You can do it on your 3200, just need to do it manually. Single will work but you wont get the true effect

Shooting in either RAW or JPEG depends entirely on your workflow and knowledge in post processing. Some beginners will complain when they load their photos and see muted flat images of RAW versus whTat their viewing on their camera, not realizing they are unworked files. But if youre only out for a day of snapshots JPEG is entirely fine.

I personally steer clear of HDR, but bracketing would be your best option under ideal conditions. A single shot can work when youre dealing with people or skies (clouds move a lot faster then you'd expect)

I'd shoot jpg if storage space were at a premium. Storage space is never at a premium.

I always shoot in Dual mode, I don't edit my photos. But Storage is cheap.

Great responses. No doubt that memory is cheap, RAW seems like a pretty good choice then. Is their a certain EV that should be followed? Such as -2, 0, +2.

To me it depends on the lighting. I have a Nikon D7100 which can take 5 auto bracket shots. I usually do it every 1+/- EV if doing 5. HDR is cool but as another poster said, it just to surreal for me. A lot of urban photographer use it but I think a natural shot with natural light is much better.

Also If you ever plan on upgrading your camera some day and want to stay Nikon and DX format. Get a D7000 or 7100. It has two memory card slots where you can set it to save Raw on slot one and JPEG on slot two. I have done this many times. SD cards are cheap now

If you have enough space on your memory card, I'd recommend shooting JPEG+RAW. It's a pain in the ass to show RAWs to someone if you haven't bothered to put all material though Photoshop. JPEGs are quick and dirty.

I did the RAW + JPEG for a bit.....then I trashed that Idea as soon as I antied up for a camera class and lightroom 4.....100% RAW now .

once you go to edit things, RAW is the only answer. shoot it now, edit it later, less time messing with the camer is more time getting more pics = better chance of something good.

you question my mentality? LOL.

I use lightroom, I have no shame in saying that. I'm a noob with a lens; I took one class and I am mostly self taught after that. I have saved a shot that I thought was trash with lightroom.

On the tother hand......I'm not saying "don't worry about knowing what you are doing, lightroom/post editing will be your band-aid". No. I'm saying shoot in RAW and have all the info in the image. You might wanna go back and do a B&W, maybe an HDR look, tone down some sunlight oversaturation, maybe change the clarity, etc etc down the line. WIth a JPEG, what you have is about it, distortion is high and end result suffers.

All good responses. I guess it just depends on how much you like editing. Are you a complete control freak stick with RAW. JPEG filters so much out so there is a lot less to edit. I do like having both files though. Ya know for when I feel like being lazy. Just start stocking on cards though. They go fast when you shoot both

Closer than you think~ When you dig up the past, you tend to get dirty.

QFT.

a 32G SanDisk is cheap.

being able to do anything to your shot and still have the original no matter what, is not.
