Tips on finding a point of entry?

Hey guys! I'm going on my first urban exploration trip in a few weeks, and I wanted to see if anyone could give me tips on finding a point of entry (or any tips in general if you have 'em)?

The place I'm going to is a multi-story building in the city, so it's open and easily visible, so it might be easy to get caught trying to get in (The few times I've been by it there were a few cars driving by, but I'd imagine that there would be "off" hours where hardly anyone is around). Directly adjacent to it are two other abandoned multi-story buildings, though they're a story or two shorter than the main building. There also doesn't seem to be any ladders or alleys to get to the roof.

I'm fairly confident that if I can get roof access to one building, I'll be able to access all the other buildings. But the place looked pretty well boarded-up from the outside. Though I know there HAS to be a way in because I've seen pictures of the inside that were taken in the middle of the day.

So, anyone have any tips for finding entry points?

I like to go to a place a day or so before hand and look around outside and scout for POE's. You can even comeback a few hours later if you feel like you didn;t attract any attention.

Getting roof access usually means you'll find a way inside, at least for architecture over here. You never know when you'll find a ladder lying around, also, or even something else inconspicuous you can climb. One of my tricks for climbing one-storey things is to park my scooter next to it and use that as a stepping stool. You could probably do the same thing with a garbage can or the right shaped piece of wood.

If you don't find anything, come back another time and see what's changed.

A lot of times there's a piece of board that's broken. A lot of it is a matter of looking closer up. Property owners want the building to look secured and boarded up so that people don't try to get in. The trick really is to have an eye for the out of place--is one board slightly different from the others? Is there a trash bag taped over anything?

A lot of times for buildings with boards my POE is the basement, getting in through a smashed lower window.

And about the roof thing, you get access from inside. I've been to the roof of nearly every abandonment I've gone to, usually there's a ladder from the top floor.

it's darker later than it was at first

Just walk around the place the day before and scope for loose boards, open windows, ladders, etc. or predawn is a good way to have the cover of darkness with the light of day for seeing and shooting.

Hahahaha, This title was asking for innuendo.

Walk around aimlessly till you give up, than go home feeling empty and like a failure. Remember to Check every door nob, push and pull on everything, Don't assume something is secured. Oh and use your Telephot lens.

This. I've gotten onto quite a few roofs in my time, and access has almost always been from inside. Otherwise what's to stop every man and his dog partying on up there?

Sometimes the access is from the ground floor though. A school I once visited had a comms riser (i.e. a small, windowless space that carries power and data cable, pipework etc) with a ladder that went from the ground all the way into a small shed like building with a door on the roof. Tight as a duck's arse, that was...

I find as long as you get off the ground, entry becomes more likely. Second-floor windows are less likely to be sealed than first-floor windows, even when there are fairly obvious ways of getting up there. Same goes for roof access, although I suspect that's considerably more viable where I live; I've never seen a roof where you can get locked out.

» Do a perimeter walk around the building.
» Look for graffiti
» Broken windows
» Weak doors and vulnerabilities

Usually you'd want to enter though an access way that someone has already created. Never have breaking in as your first option. If you can't find a way in by default, then you may consider breaking in, which is something a lot of us don't condone. Your decision, your responsibility.

Consequences may be very grave. Remember, constant vigilance!

Im kind of a noob myself, only been on 4 sites but its not hard if you pay attention. Popular places will ususlly have graffiti & a lot of the times, there will be painted arrows leading you to P.O.E. Just about any out of the way place will be less secure unless its military or governmental.

Dont get pissed off on your first look. All security systems have a weakness, boards & steel doors are no different. All doors are hinged & most of them can have their pins tapped out with a punch & small hammer (rubber/brass) if you have it. They dont make as much noise. For boards, a good old pry bar rules. If the boards are secured with deck screws, a cordless impact driver will take care of that pesky problem.

Im no B&E junkie (I prefer stealth) but you gotta do watcha gotta do. So far Ive been in an Endicott battery, several buildings at 2 separate psych centers & some military buildings on a semi active base
