Getting in to UE/assembling a group?

Hiya guys, I've been a member of this site for a couple of years, but have mainly used it for lurking the forums and databases. I've read books like "Access All Areas" to get a better understanding of urban exploration, and now that I'm going to be 18 in a few days, and have the money for supplies and a means of transportation, I'd like to actually get in to exploring areas myself. Thing is, none of my friends are keen to the idea of trespassing, and I work better in a small group than all on my own. So what tips do you guys have on how to find people interested in UE? I'm finding that trust is a bit hard to gain in the UE community when you're a newbie like myself, so I'm finding it hard to get a decent start.

Also, any tips you could give me for my first exploration? Dos/don'ts? I've read various guides and all, but no harm in getting additional info.

And, to anyone interested, feel free to PM me if you want me to go exploring with you. I'm located in the Hillsborough county area (Florida), and of course I'll give you a link to my Facebook profile so you can actually talk to me and see that I'm legit and not a vandal/arsonist/cop or whatever. I have a very small list of locations I've found that we could check out, too (The list used to be bigger, but it got lost so I'm in the process if re-finding and re-adding locations).

I just joined last week, the SE forum have a few organized groups in Atlanta area. Perhaps you should start prodding through there, see if you see anything familiar in some of the galleries and such. Never know who's in your area till you see pictures from places you've seen or been to sometimes.

Certainly won't hurt!

Funny you'd mention Atlanta. I was vacationing in north-eastern Georgia just last week, and when we were driving through Atlanta (And through Georgia in general), there were LOADS of abandoned places. I wanted to stop and look around, but my parents weren't too keen about the idea, unfortunately :\

It can be hard to find your spot in the exploring community. As you said, trust is a major factor and once it's lost it's hard to gain it back. When it comes to entering the exploring community you've made an excellent start by joining UER and reading about others experiences and advice.

Another good place to start is to begin exploring solo. Sometimes you can't find another person to explore with, but that doesn't mean you have to sit it out. If you enjoy photography then bring your camera with and take plenty of shots. I have a Flickr account and I actually made my first contact with my local exploring community through that. If people see your photos then they can see that you've put in the effort to explore places that you sought out on your own.

Don't ask for site locations. That's one of the worst things you can do and it often won't get you anywhere. Most explorers aren't willing to share the location of sites they love and with good reason. No one wants bro dudes destroying their favorites sites or getting them sealed, and they don't know who you are.

Don't expect it to happen overnight. Just because your explore a site or two and post a couple of pictures here and there it doesn't mean you'll instantly be accepted into your community. Give it time, explore during that time and keep a responsible image here on UER.

Your area may or may not have a large community. Where I'm from there's a strong and excellent community, but even then it took me time to be brought into it. Even if there isn't a large community in your area that doesn't mean there aren't explorers, they'll just be harder to find.

As for your first sites my recommendations are these: pack accordingly, do plenty of research before going, keep an eye out when entering the site, be respectful off the site and be just as vigilant when leaving the site. Close doors behind you so it isn't obvious someone's inside, bring plenty of extra batteries for your flashlights or headlamp (bring more than one flashlight), wear clothes that will protect you from broken glass and/or nails and pack water. Don't ever get complacent, no matter how many times you've visited a site, and don't bring anyone with you that you don't trust.

Asher0719, good post!

I would say that your advice is salient for most "private" groups where trust is important. Most caving grottoes that I am aware of are very protective of their information until they get to know a new caver. To some extent, mine explorers are as well. Most of us have a few hidden gems that we don't share until we know that we can trust that person.

When I started exploring I would just get out a topo map and look for mine symbols. On a weekend I would head out into the desert with my camera. I did little write-ups and posted pictures on a mine exploring website. In time I gained credibility, got to know other explorers, and began to get a few invitations.

It can be a slow process but it does develop an explorer's reputation, either good or bad. Some people become part of the group and others are simply not invited again.
