| | That awkward moment when you meet the owner. < on 7/22/2013 12:53 AM >
| | | I was up the side of a mountain 80km from anywhere (for a job) and I saw a red roof. I went over and snapped some pictures:
Inside After checking out a ton of baller machinery and tools I left and pitched a tent down the road. There was a hidden trail camera. At first he was "Don't appreciate that". But then he turned out to be a really cool dude and we shared some beer. Everything went better then expected. Any of you meet the owner?

| | | hah cool story. Did he share anything about the location?
I was shooting an old house once and the owner saw a car parked on the side of the road and stopped to ask what we were doing. After explaining what we were doing there, she said she loves old historical photos and keeping history and stories alive and said we could stay and continue photographing. I guess they had the house vandalized a few times since it was all closed up, so she wanted to make sure we weren't up to no good. The photo set is "Gilchrist House 01" in my galleries. I've often wanted to stop by and ask neighbors about a property I'm shooting to see if they have any history or stories on the site. I should do it more often. It makes a site much more interesting.

| | | 1) Angry hunter carrying a rifle running toward me as I explore his abandoned house.
2) An old lady threatened to cut my head off for exploring Herrons Mill. 3) msgsudz and myself meet a trio of elderly farmers after exploring their property. I'm sure I could think of more.

Shared a few physical things to check out around the property (like cliffs, clearings and good views worth checking out). The building was just around for winter recreation (... helicopter or snowmobile ride in). He did a lot of the construction himself. Not a lot of history there (it's fairly new, probably around 2005). Awe, that's awesome And more memorable, I'll give that a go the next time I get a chance

| | | I climbed a grain silo during the day, and then halfway up realized that 2 cars pulled up to the silo and started circling, clearly looking for me. When I saw one was on a cell phone, I decided it was time to leave. By the time I had made it back down the stairs, the cars were gone, but there was a guy poking around down below. I decided to ask him 'if he knew anything about this place'. He said yea, that he was friends with the owner and had a bunch of stuff stored there. I told him I was just taking pictures, and he said to be really careful up there of the open pits, etc. etc. Seeing this as an opportunity, I said I would be careful, and then went back up the stairs before he could tell me to stay out of there.

| | | My friend told about an abandoned barn with some old cars in back so we decided to go check it out. As we were walking around to the back to see the cars I looked through a window in the barn and saw somebody. I told my friend and she went back to check her car and ran into the owner, an old lady with a small dog. The old lady started bitching at her and was threatening to call the cops as I came around the corner to calm her down. As soon as she noticed me her attitude changed and she started complimenting me on my camera and became the typical nice old lady. We apologized and left.

| | | a story of a friend that was doing a sneak dive on a flooded cave out in the middle of a field: When his dive was over and he resurfaced, he was met right in the face with shotgun. He quickly got off the property. There's no telling what a crazy redneck will do on their own property...and in FL, it's perfectly legal to shoot someone dead on your property and call it whatever you want. This works in favor of people breaking into your home, but is pretty scary when you're just out exploring what you think is an abandoned property...

| | | As close as I ever got was to be threatened online by some guy who claims to own the mine that I had posted photos of. I told him when the "No Trespassing" signs went up I would stay away. Never heard any more. Fortunately we had already explored the mine pretty thoroughly. I haven't been back into the area to see if he put up signs or not. Abby Normal

| | | We were at a slaughter house once and exploring a barn on the property and I heard footsteps upstairs so we ran outside and came face to face with the property owner. Made up a bs story and left before he could call cops. I usually talk to neighbors sometimes they actually own the places or know who does and if your charming they sometimes let you explore another time I saw an old Datsun 240 z on (what I thought ) was an abandoned property. I didn't make it ten feet from the car before a lady ran over to me from across the street and started yelling . I explained to her I was just interested in shooting a few photos of the car and her mood totally changed, by the time we were done talking she told me I could have the car! I declined because I have too many cars already but just shows you a smile and nice conversation can totally change people's attitudes .

| | | Hah this happened to me and a group of friends, we were exploring n old auditorium, when all of a sudden someone yelled run and everybody scattered. Of course me and two other fun into the ONE room where there is no exit on the other side and the guy comes in a catches us behind some old stage set. It was awesome though, he actually introduced himself and gave us a tour of the place. So in reality it doesn't always turn out bad

| | | My friend and I heard through the grapevine about a beautiful abandoned house in our area, so we decided to go try to find it. After driving for an hour, we found it! And it was beautiful:
We parked a ways down the road and trekked through the woods behind the house to get to it. When we got up to the back of the house, we saw this:
Within 2 minutes, a red pickup truck came flying in the driveway. We took off back into the woods while an angry looking man started walking around the back of the house, looking for us. when he got around one side of the house, we ran towards the door and back to the car. When we got to the car, my friend realized she'd lost her keys somewhere in the woods. We had to do a complete walk of shame back to the house, explain ourselves to the guy and ask for permission to root around in the yard to find her car keys. He complied, and understandably he wasn't very nice about it. He kept asking we were witches and if we were planning to do rituals, because are tatted up. I'm sorry but that's one of the funniest things I've read on here. I understand, though... I actually wear a pentagram necklace, but no one's ever asked if I was a witch; they usually accuse me of being Jewish. :v

| | | How about showing up at a site & the squatters think you are the owner? We recently stopped at a location & there were other people there. They had what looked like a woodshop going in a barn. When we approached them, "Hello is this your place?" They turned their backs, walked over to their truck & hauled ass out into a vineyard. They left the radio on & $$$ worth of high end tools. Then a few minutes later, while walking through the complex. "Hello?" We could hear Spanish radio/TV & people talking & laughing. Another group of people came out of some bungalows(was a closed down Hot spring resort). They looked at us & ran the same direction as the others. WTF??? We were a bit confused. I'm not sure what they were up to, illegal aliens? Weren't scrappers. The place was in mint condition. Clyde
The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us? |

| | | Haha that's awesome. I once wandered into an abandoned-looking junkyard in Brooklyn. I mean, the place was built from nailed together scrap metal and was incredibly rusted. There was a screwed up and open chain linked fence. I was just poking around, snapping a few pictures, when the owner and his gigantic watchdog came out from behind some old cars. The dog chased me out, and he ran after me screaming, "GET OUT OF MY BACKYARD!" (later I googled the place and found that it was owned by a railroad line and not anybody's backyard).
it's darker later than it was at first |
