Exploring with diabetes

I was wondering how many if any of you here have diabetes. If so what types of steps do you take when exploring to makes sure that you are safe. Personally I have been a type 1 diabetic for almost 15 years and as I get more interested in UE I find that I don't feel comfortable going farther from home without a trusted friend with me in case something happens. Unfortunately it is not very easy to get a friend to go with me often so I end up not being able to see some good locations that I would really like to cross off of my list. Does anybody have any suggestions or experience with this issue?

I always bring lots of glucose and water. Always test before you leave the house, start exploring, etc. It's not hard, but you always need to be careful since you don't want to get caught with bad blood sugar because it'll mess with your judgement.

Where am I? What's going on? Sorry officer, I'm a bit confused. I thought that abandoned asylum was my house.

Something like that?

That would work maybe if he gave you a blood test.

just make sure you have something with you in case your blood sugar drops suddenly. if i am going to be inside of a location for a few hours or more i will typically cut my basal rate in half and check my blood sugar every hour or so.

yeah ive been on the pump since 1999 with a few stints back on injections here and there. for any kind of activities i really feel like the pump is a much better way to go than injections. having the ability to decrease the amount of insulin i take by 1/10th of a unit as opposed to an entire unit from a syringe (never mind trying to get one or two units using a 100 that draws out 10 units at a time haha!) coupled with much tighter control over all makes the pump a no - brainer for me.
i understand not everyone can get one but if you can - i would highly recommend it. ive been type 1 for almost 30 years and thankfully have yet to place a lot of restrictions on the things i do (if any). also, i wouldnt be too worried about exploring alone being T1 too much either. sure - you have to take calculated risks but to live our lives in fear of what might happen as a result of our disease would be like not living at all, in my opinion.

like i said - for me, taking less insulin is the way to go. i can deal with high blood sugars while exploring and just juice up at the end of the day!

I hear ya!!

Been diabetic for a long time, 26 years.

Moved to the pump now for 6 months, working out pretty good. Held off this thing for at least 10 years but ran out of excuses.

It's already improved my A1C scores by an actual 2.0 %!!!!!! from 9.1 to 7.1.

And no more having to eat on a schedule.

but frequent testing is key.

With this pump, I wouldn't hesitate to do anything (but you've got to test!)

I don't have any personal experiences with diabetes and exploring. Although, back when I used to hitchhike around the country, I would quite often travel with my my best friend who happens to have diabetes. He would always make sure he had insulin, glucose tablets, candies, water, etc. He had this thing set up with shoppers drug mart and could get insulin from any location. I'm definitely not saying this was safe, just using it as an example that a day out exploring might not be too bad as long as you use your head.
