Nike Missile Sites - Thule, Greenland

Oddly enough, a search didn't turn up any threads on these sites in Greenland. I was up there a few years back and thought they were pretty cool (literally and figuratively).

The doors have been wide open on these for years (probably decades) and the elements have added their own spice to the sites.

Sorry for the pic quality. I took these with a brand new (at the time) 3.2 MP digital camera, so it was about 10 years ago.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Set of pictures from the first site:

View from the road upon approach.

The site.

Of all the sites out there (I visited three, but really only two had anything of note) this was the only true above ground structure left.

Looking over the site from the tower.

Door leading into the main magazine. I found a different path in.

The path I found.

The magazine.

The all important picture of a chair. This one is frozen in time, and 18" of ice.

The throne, also frozen under ice.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This set is from the other site:

Above ground.

Looking back at the ladder entrance.

The other exit, frozen over for the most part.

The bay doors from below.

This one had significantly more ice in it - about 6'. This is a full-size doorway that I could barely slide through on my back (with my gear on). My stomach rubbed as I pulled through (and I'm a pretty slim guy). There was another room at the end of the hall way but no room to stand up in or even roll over.

The doorway in the previous picture is visible to the right of the electrical disconnects here.

Safety shower.

Chain hoist frozen in the ice.

I have no idea what condition they're in now but given the climate and relatively light traffic, I'd guess they're still in good shape. Anyways, enjoy.

Pretty dang cold. That was in the early Spring and was starting to get warm again. Once the sun came up for the Summer, it usually got pretty comfortable out (relatively so: in the 40's). Due to the permafrost however, the temp in the silos probably never gets above 20*F.

During the Winter it's a vicious beast. I'd be surprised if those silos ever got above -10*F.

The temperature fluctuations are much less underground than on the surface. It's quite likely it's warmer in the silos in the winter than outside.

You're absolutely correct. -20*F is a nice warm day up there in the winter.

Excellent location and set. We have many similar locations here in Cali but the preserved ones are the only intact ones. This is bad-ass, thanks for posting.

I've been out shooting in the Nevada mountains in the winter and it was -15F, my remote froze up so I had to wing it. This is of course the desert, so its very dry as well though.

Amazing Set, So glad to see a well preserved in tact Nike site. As Decrepitude said, California is littered with Nike sites along the coast but nothing like this.

The pic with this title, "Looking back at the ladder entrance." is incredible. Not that others aren't but that one really stands out for me.

Great photos, really cool (lol) stuff! It's interesting that they built the standard underground magazines, in Alaska the magazines were all aboveground due to extreme cold and permafrost issues.

From reading Ed Thelen's page (http://ed-thelen.org/) it sounds like the Thule sites were built in 1957/58 and the Alaska sites starting around 1959. Maybe they redesigned the Alaska sites based on experience at Thule?

While researching one of the San Francisco protection Zone nike sites! I contacted someone who was assigned to it that mentioned he was also assigned to one of the Thule area sites (albeit probably the IFC, not Battery). I'll try sending him a link to this thread.
