ROTC rappeling trip

I guess this isn't much of an exploration, but earlier today I was walking to my calculus recitation when I noticed army ROTC guys rappeling off the side of the chemistry lab building.

here's a picture from the U's site. They were rappeling on the left. The tree is no longer there

I asked the sarge on the ground if I could go up and take some pictures. He thought I was with the paper and happily obliged. After yelling up that I was clear to the guys on the roof, he pointed me to the stairwell. The door that had been locked so many times before was now wide open, the roar of machinery echoing down the stairs. I climbed up and got a lot of pictures of the mechainical room that makes up the entire penthouse area of the roof.

Going out the door, I see that their ropes are tied to bars bolted to the roof. Sort of a spooky setup, but I suppose it works well. I crawled out to the edge of the 3 story building and got some pictures of a guy descending.

They had a dummy dressed in fatigues and a helmet. They yelled down to the medium sized crowd and said that a guy was going to rappel aussie style (backwards). Then they dragged the dummy to the edge and tossed him down. There were a few screams and at least one "OMG!" before everone saw what it was and laughed. The ROTC guys that threw him off thought this was the funniest thing in the world.

I took some more pictures and headed out, touring the rest of the mechanical room on the way.

Not spectacularly interesting, but I got to see what was behind a perpetually locked door finally and watch ROTC operations.

When I get the pictures from my friend's digi cam I borrowed, I'll whip up some HTML and post a link to the site section.

still cool.

I saw the rescue team here doing some training off a 15 or so story building and it was pretty cool. They used the same type of set up you were describing...

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.
