AE-Photo: Favorite urban exploration shots

Hey! I'm new to this forum, I'd love your opinion on some past shoots I've done. I'll include some of my favorites. I'm also going to be posting a set on an abandoned renaissance faire once I'm done with post-processing
(I don't have a lot of time on my hands right now, so it may be a week or so.)

My gear is heavily limited: I have a Canon rebel XSI and standard kit lens. I'm working on getting more equipment soon. Most of my work is done in lightroom, but I'm trying to avoid my photographs having that very obvious "I use lightroom for everything" style. If you get what I mean.

Thank you so much for your critique I'm excited to be a part of these forums...

1. Looks a little oversharpened here, not sure why..

I feel like with the exception of 2 and 4, these lack any real composition.

I would second that, 3 also isn't too bad. The others just have a more "hey look where I was" snapshot feel (nothing wrong with that though). Besides that your photos are all pretty sharp and I like the darkness you keep in the processing. Well.... except the light switch, the focus is a little soft and I think the composition could be better (maybe not right in the middle of the frame)

I really like 2, 3, and 4, but the other ones could've used some work, though I don't think the whole lightroom usage showed through (I mean this in a positive way, of course). The 1st, 5th, and 6th probably could've benefited from less use of zoom or maybe even just taking a step back to give a more complete picture (Zeikos also has a pretty good and cheap wide angle screw on lens I use and if it doesn't fit, adapters won't set you back too far). The 5th photo kind of confuses my brain as to the subject, whether it's the trash or the graffiti. The final photo also has some weird lighting issues I can't quite put my finger on. Overall, the pictures were pretty good, but just the smallest things can make a difference. I'd just recommend trying to capture a vibe or feeling with your pictures more than individual images and see how that works out.

Which version of LR are you using?
If V4...

I would turn the highlights down a touch to get rid of some of the flash.
or turn the exposure down some and bring the shadows/whites up a bit while still turning the highlights down some.

I liked 1, crisp and colorful.
2 - this just looks cool with the darkness, tracks and the subject just coming into the light.

3 could benefit from some of the highlight adjustments and maybe zoom out a bit more.

4 - get rid of the people and crop that thing out in the bottom left corner, it's distracting

5 - meh..I might have cranked the sharpness way up on this one..or made it black and white and played with contrasting colors using all the light settings. I also wouldn't have included it in the photo set.

6 - turn down the highlights some, take out some of the shadows and brighten it a tad, perhaps sharpen it a little too. also appears to be tilted. perhaps rotate it and line it up with red wall between the elevator and pipe

7 - much too soft and close.. zoom out a tad, and don't center it so much. These usually come out better at a slight angle, and then have the switch to the left or right side more depending on the angle you shoot it from. These also look good (usually) with the clarity and sharpness cranked up (to me at least).

Good start. Don't be afraid to use lightroom to it's fullest extent or what others might say. You are creating art from what you saw through the camera... not editing photos to be something else.

Use LR to suit your mood or feelings at the time, or to clean up or fix something wrong in the image. Nothing wrong with that. I'll bet that many of the "perfect photos" you see on here you wouldn't believe the amount of steps in lightroom it took to get that image looking like it did.

It's always good to learn the camera well and do as much as you can with it, but there's just some things the camera CAN'T do, or something you missed and only noticed after you got home. That's what LR is for.

I love #2 and #4, really well done!
In #2 though there is something that looks like maybe another person in the middle of the composition, and it takes the focus off the girl, I think it would be better if you edited it to have the background simply black- an easy fix!

#2 is done well. Other than that work on your composition. #2 could have been better with the subject being brought in closer.
