| | | Strange manhole, need info... < on 7/6/2004 4:47 AM >
| | | Just noticed a strange manhole on the way to a friend's place the other day. Didn't have my cam so no pics yet. Basically, it's in a grassy area between an apartment building and the sidewalk. Has a round concrete lip sticking up about 4" from the ground, and a solid concrete cover on it with two iron handles in the middle. Same size as a regular manhole entrance. No signs or labels or anything on it though. I tried lifting the lid but it was either too heavy or stuck shut. Anyone have any idea what this could be for?
So there I was, in this creepy old hallway... |

| | | now that sounds familiar. Were the two iron handles on a square in the middle for the circle? I've seen those around town, none of witch have opened. Theres a river that has been diverted into a very large ditch and you can find these concrete boxes all along the ditch every 50 metres or so. [last edit 7/6/2004 4:55 AM by Joecat - edited 1 times]

| | | Nope, they were just stuck right in the center, basically the same as rungs going down the inside of a manhole shaft. EDIT: There's a river (thames) only a few blocks away, but there's nothing diverted anywhere in the immediate area as far as I know. It's right at a small intersection in the middle of a residential area. [last edit 7/6/2004 4:58 AM by Capone - edited 1 times]

| | | Well I know the rungs your talking about but I have no more to say unless we could see these concrete boxes. I'd try and get you a picture of the ones I found but I dont think ill get around to it before I leave on thrusday for ottawa, if the thread is still relevant when I get back I'll get on that [last edit 7/6/2004 5:09 AM by Joecat - edited 1 times]

| | | That could actually be a buried storage tank, look for nearby vents and such. Are you near a gas station? Steam Line? A picture is worth a thousand words. -SnArF

| | | I've seen these before. It's most likely just a different type of manhole cover. Lids designed to be driven and walked on repeatedly have to be flat and strong, which is why they are made of cast iron. I imagine a cast concrete lid with hoops for handles could be cheaper to produce and can be used in places where a manhole cover doesn't need to support vehicles and the hoops won't trip someone.

| | | Are the handles fixed, or do they slide up and down in the cover? Just interested, because I ran into a manhole like that the other day that I had never noticed before.

| | | Most likely a "private" manhole pull-box, located on a private owner's property where utility cables from the street, are joined to the ones feeding the building.. either electrical or telco. Manhole hooks or a truck mounted winch and two men are usually used to open those, with those handles. (They aren't meant to be grabbed by hand, even though it looks that way). Dropping the cover, when replacing it, straight into the hole is real possibility with any non-round cover.

| | | Its a well. There is a well under that cover. Some apartments have them, a few here in Belleville do. Out in the rural area's theyre where they dug for well's years ago. Its well covers you're talking about.

| | | It's not a rural area, but it is in one of the oldest areas of the city (Old South, for those of you who know London, Ont.) I'll snap a pic or two the next time I'm out thay way.

Couldn't be septic if it was a whole apartment complex.

| | | Was the area rural at one time? My neighborhood was once rural area and there are a few near me.
