Manholes open/closed?

I'm a bit curious..

When you dive underground through a manhole, do you leave the lid open, close it, do you put cones around it, ...?
What is your preferred method?

...still I venture some place scary.

Depends on the situation and it's location.

If it's likely to be your only way back out, open. Cone it. Try to park your car on top of it.

If it's in a street or somewhere that a car or pedestrian could hit the opening, by all means close it.

If it's way out in the middle of nowhere, cone it at least.

Rule of thumb: Don't be a hazard to others.

Manhole covers in Montreal Canada are damn heavy so they're almost impossible to lift from under. Some drainer friends i know use a wooden board cut in a circular shape, the size of the manhole, and put it on top of the hole upon descending in. This way it prevents people from falling in the hole.

That seems like a great idea. I don't think I could lift the monster I've got my eye on from below. Thanks!

If you park your car ON TOP of it...how do you.... you know, get inside. Or how do you get your car on top of it once you're already inside? That seems difficult, unless you have one of those vans with the floor that pulls up and you can slip down around the drivetrain.

I've found it to vary in different situations, you have to leave your options open for whichever circumstance you think is best.

And I'd suggest not "diving in" to them. Might try the feet-first approach. It's easier on your neck.

The one's which are so heavy that they're difficult to open from underneath are EQUALLY difficult to try to pull back over and into place, from underneath. If it's not directly in the middle of a street you could leave it slightly askew; but if you're ABLE to pull it over and into position, from underneath... then you can likely open it as well.

I'm pretty lanky, but I've found it somewhat easier to climb all the way up with my head bent over forward in front near the rungs, and use part of my shoulders or my back to lift up with my legs and push it back open.

@Harvestman, I don't find your posting on this thread to be in any way informative or having to do with the thread material; and it appears that you're happily waiting for a troll to show up. I find this incredibly hypocritical, given how you love to bash people for thread-derailing.

I've never used a manhole for a POE. Only big gaping openings

Smartass. Of course not RIGHT ON TOP of it, but very close proximity.

So if you park close, people could still fall in.

I guess if you could park so your bumper was hovering near the edge of it, or partially covering it then?

I've never actually been able to get most to most lids I've gone down, with a vehicle. And you don't really wanna park your vehicle in the middle of an intersection....

You really don't want to keep a manhole open in the middle of an intersection, after the first truck loses his front axle they might know that there is something missing in this road.

Wow, I actually thought Vectored Approach really meant right on top of it, and I thought that was so clever, until you pointed out the obvious right there. Now I feel dumb. As for parking in the middle of an intersection, VA was talking about leaving it open if it's your only way out. Is anyone seriously going to try getting down a drain, when the only way out is popping a manhole in the middle of an intersection? Even if it's a relatively quiet one in the middle of the night, I would never take that risk. Just no.

I am I am driving a E350 van right now and own privately a trailblazer, both would allow me to get into the manhole while I parked on top of it, but I never would do this.

how else do you own something, if not privately?

Also, this post would be like me saying "well I could rent a moving van and park on top of it and torch cut a hole in the floor to get into it, but I never would do this".

Except for two specific times, I've almost always closed them behind me.

If you're strong enough to pull it up from above, you can push it up from below.
