So.... Where have I been for the last 4 months

Sometimes when things look pretty dire for an abandonment, you are drawn to come up with an idea to try to preserve that building. 4 months ago I had an idea for the Fergus Falls Kirkbride. It was an idea to photograph every square inch and to preserve a copy of that building in photographs. The idea stuck. Money was raised (and for those that have made jokes about this in the past, NOBODY had received any compensation for travel or lodging) City Council was challenged, Insurance was provided. Many times the project seemed doomed to fail, but many believed in me and everything fell into place. At noon on 4 May 2013, 30 photographers from around the country took a noon shot from a different corridor of the Kirkbride complex and thus began something now known as Project Kirkbride. Every Photographer covered roughly 20,000 sq ft of the 500,000+ sq ft asylum. All weekend photographers also toured the Complex, and had the ability to explore the cottages and outbuildings on campus. Morning exteriors and long night exposures were also taken. Altogether, estimates are somewhere between 30,000 - 50,000 total images taken. The website, http://www.projectkirkbride.org will go live sometime in the next 6 months and be completed with in the year. This site will line up every photograph during the 3hrs of official shooting to a floor plan of the building, and in some areas will be available as a 3d walk thru. Video was shot on most of the building and will also be viewable on the site. In the wait for the data collection and site organization, I would love for all who are interested in this, the largest "permission" explore I am aware of, feel free to view or work at our temporary home http:// www.facebo...m/ProjectKirkbride. Once everything is done to our satisfaction, the project will in its entirety, be given to the Otter Tail County Historical Society as a permanent display.

One final note: a solid lead on a developer for the kirkbride came forward the day after we left. Regardless of outcome, this building will be drastically changed one way or another in the next couple years.. We all felt honored to preserve this monument's last days as a former state hospital.

Thank you. What an incredible project and cheers to everyone involved. These are the types of things that lead to substantial progress on the preservation front, so you've all done some tangible good in this world other than creating great art, I believe.

I can't wait to see this. Wish I was able to have participated, as I'll never get up there before it's changed.

It's a great idea and I'm glad you guys did it.

Thanks, we hope so. At the very least, we got a photographic copy of the kirkbride, and made some new friends.... I believe that this could be something special in the recognition of the intended good these asylums were meant to provide.

We are already seeing a lot of photos come thru on the public facebook page. Its gonna be a solid year for the main website to be complete. Once that is done, I hope to move on to other endangered kirkbrides. This was a solid 4 months of work just to get to the shoot date, but now we know how. Come this time next year hopefully we can do it again

It was an honor to have been a part of this. I can't wait for phase II to begin and the project to start taking form.

I'm sad that the people behind the Buffalo psych renovations didn't have a similar genius idea. Kudos to you on this great project.

yeah, no doubt brotha. Everybody was great on the project and I wish I had more time to "hang" with people, but it is amazing to see everybodys photographic take on the buildings. Glad you could come along

it just goes to show that if you have ideas... speak up! I suggested it as a simple idea and it exploded. Support is always there, but somebody has to make that suggestion. Buffalo would have been a prime location for this, but, it was thought of way to late. I am just glad they saved the building and are keeping it around for a long time...

thank you. support has been phenomenal. turns out people on the other side of the "no trespassing" signs care about historic structures. Its actually a pivotal time in that city as the first time council has voted to move forward with an idea in spite of the city administrator's initial thumbs down of the project. Gives me hope that they might actually save this building

So, I'm still not sure I understand. The final product will be a virtual walkthrough, sort of like Google Street View, right? Or something more advanced? I can't imagine another reason to photograph every inch of a building.

Photographic preservation. Basically building is going to be repurposed or demoed this year or next. Period. The main purpose behind it is to stop time, so to speak and capture it as it is in its last days of simply being a former state hospital. We wanted to do this before it became a danvers or a worcester. The 3d aspect is something I myself am curious to see how it looks, and more than likely will pretty intensive.. somebody in my group is heading that part up

There will also be a lot of other aspects to the website. We are also looking currently into talking to former patients and employees who came to us thru the facebook page and hope to incorporate their testimonials
