First time exploring - Need tips please!
< on 3/25/2013 4:11 AM >

Hey all, I'm Civil. I'm pretty new to UE and have never done it before. I plan to go with a couple buddies that have experience so I can shoot a short documentary. Since it's my first trip, I do have a few questions.

1) What kinda stuff do I need for a relatively short, aboveground trip? Just the essentials.
2) What kinda pack should I take for my gear? I have all kinds of bags. My gear is no more than whatever stuff I need from question 1 and a small tripod/dslr.
3) Are there any essential rules/guidelines that I should know? I already poked around the rookie forums so I have a general idea, just being safe!

Thanks all! Here's to a good first experience.

Day or Night? Either way a flashlight is pretty much essential.
If you are asking about photog and video gear, stick to fast and wide primes.
Boots! and sometimes gloves
(And I really feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but wear pants)

2) What kinda pack should I take for my gear? I have all kinds of bags. My gear is no more than whatever stuff I need from question 1 and a small tripod/dslr.

Backpacks are nice if you can fit all your gear in it. They (IMO) tend to be more versatile, and less sketchy looking. Also if you are a pro photog, you don't want to be real flashy with your equipment and gear in areas and situations where you may not be welcome.

3) Are there any essential rules/guidelines that I should know? I already poked around the rookie forums so I have a general idea, just being safe!

The rookie forum is probably your best bet for good info, and common sense. (always carry a pack of cigs!)

1) Flashlight, water, shoes. All other clothing optional.

2) Backpack or satchel work best.

3) Don't be stupid.

If you take ANY random object, and you are busted, you can (and more likely will) be charged for theft.

Everyone, chill the fuck out! I got this.

Thanks dude! I'm a pretty rookie photographer also, so I don't have a lot of equipment to worry about. I'm not old enough to/probably will never smoke but thanks anyways!

I have gloves for you, so unless you want to buy your own, these are the pair I have for you

They are super cheap, but do the job.

Otherwise, you won't need cigarettes, while it may be a better idea for others, you won't need a pack

Bring:
•Backpack
•LED Flashlight
•Long Pants (for j3tt1s0n)
•Good shoes for exploring
•Camera for you, not always for others
•A pair of knee high rain boots (you will probably want them for draining)
•Phone
•Tripod!

That is what I recommend...

1. Water, Flashlight, depends on what building you're going in I'd suggest even a surgical mask so as note to breath in air, thats full of dust and other things. The all purpose knife one was a good idea too.
2. As they've all said a backpack works. It should be able to carry everything.
3. Don't be stupid. Sometimes the risk is not worth the building. Pay full attention to your surroundings, and typically you should scope out a location and figure out all the location points of entry before you go in and get yourself caught with only one p.o.e.

Welcome to the community! When it comes to exploring it really depends on the site when it comes to rules of thumb. For an above ground abandonment you mostly need to keep an eye out when entering and exiting the site because you never know how well patrolled it is. Keep an eye out for functioning cameras and motion detectors and keep an ear out for alarms. If you hear an alarm, just leave.

If you're exploring an abandonment at night then watch out where you shine your flashlight (basically keep it clear of windows).

If you decide to post photos here or on flickr, etc then make sure you don't announce to the world what the exact location is or post a photo of the entry point. That won't win you a lot of friends.

When it comes to gear for above ground you'll want a flashlight or two along with backup batteries. You may want a respirator but your friends will know if they're familiar with the location. Wear shoes with thick soles and clothes you don't care about (they'll get dirty and possibly torn). Gloves are a must too. A backpack is the best kind of bag for exploring. Go for one that isn't too large and has room for a headlamp/flashlight, batteries, gloves etc. (aka the bag doesn't need to be huge and should be one that can get dirty).

If you like to take photos make sure your pack can safely carry your camera and a tripod (though you may end up hauling that yourself unless your pack as a tripod strap on the side).

The cigarettes wouldn't be for you... Hobos and squatters tend to be a lot friendlier when you can offer something as simple as a smoke. Friendlier as opposed to many other less positive choices.

Yes smokes, and maybe a small bottle of hooch is always helpful.

If you're not of age to buy smokes, carry food on you. That'll likely get them to be more friendly too.

Everyone else has already given you the suggestions that I would have given, but there is one more that I think is pretty important.

If something really unexpected and unpleasant happens, take it as a learning experience and try not to spend too much time dwelling on it and overthinking things.

Good luck!

Good call. I agree. You don't want to sit at the fence saying "I don't know about this, you guys think this is a good idea?"

However, you don't want to go in somewhere that you have a bad feeling about. My dad got an eerie feeling about a location that Ghettokumquats and I explored. In a nutshell, we were basically chased out by a sheriff helicopter. Don't let other people's stories scare/intimidate you, but use it as a preparedness factor. For instance, if I heard that a homeless person was threatening people with a knife, I would be mindful, and prepare my pack for the situation. (Knife, Pepper spray, extra flashlight, and ANOTHER PERSON)
