Best way to meet people for group exploring?

Hi uer.ca,

I've been interested in urban exploration for a very long time but until a few months ago, I didn't know it was called that. In that time I've picked up Access All Areas, done some research, subscribed to the urbanexploration subredit. I've shared my interest with my friends they all think its a cool idea, however none of us have any experience. I'm not to keen on learning the ropes on my own and lone wolfing a exploration, and I don't think dragging 2 or 3 more newbies on an exploration would make it any better. So what's the best way to meet people, that share this interest?

Well aside from the obvious advice that you should be attractive and female, I'd say the best thing to do is contact people in your area through this site, Flickr, and maybe random blogs. It's also a good idea if you have something to get their attention, like information on a site you know.

Look at the local forums. Talk to people. Don't be a douche. Take it fairly serious as not to attract unwanted attention. Start small with the group you have, abandoned house in the woods, local park with ruins in it, etc. Don't move on till you really want too tackle more "dangerous" stuff. Reddit.com is a good way to meet local people with similar interest.

And, most importantly, have boobs.

If you're male, that's no excuse.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

I never said that.

Some of my best friends are men with gynecomastia (or possibly implants - it's hard to tell sometimes).

Being a new explorer myself I think that's kinda the fun of it. You are experiencing it for the first time with people who are also experiencing it for the first time. I'm not looking for a tour, I'm looking to explore!

Although I can see some obvious benefits to having a seasoned explorer along with you, I wouldn't say it's a must. Just don't be stupid and learn from your mistakes (once ended up walking about 5 miles more then we should have had to xD). If you can find someone who is interested, by all means meet up! But don't let their absence stop you and your friends from an amazing time!

When I first started I went a couple places alone and took some photos. Then I showed them to people I knew, some of which were impressed enough to want to tag along. The more people I got to tag along, the cooler places I could go, and the cycle repeats :p It was a pretty good system haha. Though sometimes you do end up going with people just trying the hobby out who don't share your level of interest.

Even if none of your friends are interested it's still good to talk to people about it. I've had friends who refuse to go with me but will tell me about locations they've driven passed or introduce me to other friends they have that are interested.

If you have any interest in photography whatsoever, or even if you don't, I recommend making a flickr account and checking out some stuff on there. Flickr is one of my favorite resources, the vast majority of my locations, location information, and explorer contacts have come from there. It is pretty easy to find people near your location on there and as long as you show an appreciation for their photos and a genuine interest in exploring they're usually incredibly friendly. I actually wouldn't even be on this site had a flickr contact (Jack Strathmore) not recommended it to me.

Unlike some(very talented) photographers, I didn't initially get into the hobby to take photos, but I still carry my point-and-shoot to document the trip and that made all the difference. Like others have said, posting your photos gains you some "web-cred" as it were, and when they see you checking out cool places, they'll want to tag along.

With that said, my friends couldn't care less that I enjoy UE, and I haven't been able to drag any of them along. I've only met up with a group once, and it was awesome, but most of my explores have been done alone recently.

Get involved with the community, share your own stories, and you will find new "Doors" open up for you!

To fail in what you've yet to achieve is more the spirit of exploration than to make no attempt at all.

Not just any door.
THE Door.

I've managed to get my friends into the experience, but I'm the one who actively goes out and searches for locations. I just bring them along for the ride because it sets me a bit more at ease, and they can take amazing photos that they never would have gotten before.
