May be venturing on my first tunnel explore and need advice

I have been UEing since I was a kid(Back then it was just called breaking and entering lol). Anyways after seeing some pics and reading some forums here I have gained a lot of interest in tunnel exploring. I just had a few questions before I commit with my friend.

What should I bring to be safe. I have a mask I use for factories and what not and I have fishing waders, but should I bring more besides the norm essentials?

I have Chronic Hives, I break out real easy from mold and it has happened to me while exploring just abandoned buildings. I keep an eppy pen handy at all times, is exploring sewage tunnels to risky, I wanna do it but not if its gonna risk my life.

and last but not least how do I find out what times water will rise and flow through tunnels on a daily basis.

Thanks in advance for help.

what kind of "tunnel" is this? It sounds like you're talking about a drain or sewer of some kind. Is it a storm drain? A sanitary sewer? A combined system? As for water levels, that depends greatly on the system as well... But generally, the if it rains, no drains rule is a good one. Is this a tidal drain of any kind? I would point you to predator's approach to draining as it covers a lot of really good information and is a pretty entertaining read to boot. (http://www.urbex.o...oach/approach.html)

Yes it is a sewer drain, and thanks for the link I will check out for sure. So if it doesnt rain for a few days I am safe?

If you go SewerFresh, there is a good chance you catch Siologenitis.

Symptoms are general swelling, voice becomes booming with a Scottish/Australian account and bones become more brittle and susceptible to breakage.

Storm drains are better and have less sanitary napkins and condoms in them.

I thought you said genital swelling. And you just can't go in there. It's against policy.

First of all, there's a rookie forum you can find on the main page. That would be a better place to ask these questions as you won't get trolled.

I think you should just stay out of sewers until you know what you're doing. They're smelly anyway. If you want to go draining on the other hand, which is easier and less smelly, rubber boots and a flashlight should work out fine for you. And as long as the ground outside is dry and the weather forecast says there's no precipitation of any kind, you should be safe.

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house,

I've been in several drains and sewage tunnels and both are fairly harmless and definitely worth it. Some don't have the stomach for sewage, but it's easy to get used to and if you have major issues wear a respirator (it won't keep all the smell out, but at least some).

Drains: When it comes to drains you won't have much to worry about when it comes to risks. The gear you need are waders (either chest or hip) or rain boots depending on the drain (your friend will hopefully be familiar with the average water levels of the drain. If not, play it safe and wear waders). A headlamp is a must. Carrying a flashlight through a drain is annoying and your arms are helpful when it comes to balancing or, at times, crawling. If you're going at night a headlamp with a red light is also a must, because shining your white/blue light outside of the entrance is a big don't. Wear jeans and long sleeves, preferably a sweatshirt. Depending on where you're from drains can be pretty cold this time of year not to mention the temperature of the water. Dress in layers though, because all that walking can raise your body temperature quickly. Wear gloves. Drains can be a slimy, gross mess at times, especially if you have to crawl through them or climb a ladder down from or to a manhole (those ladders can be rusty and/or corroded as well).

Sewers: Sewers can be a whole different ball game at times. I'd play it safe and wear your waders, but make sure to check them for cracks and/or holes (patch them with duct tape or buy new waders if you find any that aren't repairable). Believe me, you don't want a boot full of sewage. Like drains you'll need a headlamp, and if it's at night make sure it features a red light. Jeans and long sleeves go here as well, you honestly want to keep as much skin covered as you can when it comes to your limbs (especially your legs). This will keep your skin protected from anything that might cause it to break out, but of course bring your epi pen just in case. If you're concerned about breathing in mold/bacteria wear a respirator, preferably a P100 (3M makes a very affordable one if the one you have won't work). Like drains, you'll want gloves as well. You're not going to be diving into the stuff, but who knows what might happen.

Like any explore make sure to bring extra batteries, because a dead headlamp in a pitch black tunnel is never fun. Make sure to carry a backpack for all the gear you want (tunnels make for some pretty awesome photo ops so bring a camera!).

When it comes to water levels there's no certain way to know. The basic rule of thumb for drain exploring is "if it rains, no drains". Even if it sprinkles, keep out. It's amazing how a tiny rain storm can create a rushing river in a drain and there's no way you can outrun it. It also doesn't take a lot of rushing water to sweep you off your feet (and not in a romantic way), so watch out. Go on a dry, clear day. Check your forecast for the entire day before you go and keep an eye out for rising water levels. Be cautious, just like an abandonment, and be aware of your surroundings. Don't enter through a manhole that's easily visible (say, in the middle of the street) and make sure you keep track of which ways you've turned to avoid getting lost in a drain that's unfamiliar.

Have fun!

Don't do it. You can get into trouble with the gases before you even know it's too late.

Poo sewers.

I've been going in storm drains for more than 30 years and only smelt rotten egg gas.

Also, as well as all this other fantastic advice, bring someone else to walk in front of you to catch all the spider webs, and to take knocks on their head from when the tunnel changes sizes.

In tight tunnels with a fellow explorer or three that have had a few beers and kababs the night before... now there's a noxious gas issue you want to avoid at all costs!!!
