Because everyone either has a car or finds it absolutely necessary to shovel their walks?

Yes.

You'd be surprised about the shoveling. If someone lives there, there's some kind of path they take to get to the road. At least in the snow we usually get you can always see the clumsy knee-deep footprints easily. It's either that or the resident is some creepy weirdo who never leaves.

It can also tell you about how traveled your local abandonments are. One building I know is abandoned has the driveway taken care of often and you can see frequent tire tracks. So I think I'll let that one go.

Then there's just the footprints of previous explorers. I'm a lame weirdo, so I'm even interested in how often people poke around my area. And not gonna lie, sometimes I just follow them to entrances, haha.

I'm familiar with the concept of snow and houses. I lived south of chicago for a couple years. Just because I live in southern california now doesn't mean I've never been around snow before. lol.

I'm more than happy to stay inside for a week straight if I don't have work going on though.

I always assumed no one could live in your area unless they'd never seen any other type of place before.

I think I came across my first squatter's nest. I was exploring a house, came across a room with a mattress, a ton cigarette butts, and other signs of recent activity which included one women's high heel. Decided it would be best that I get out right away, didn't want to be upstairs if the person came back, would have been trapped.

I have never come across any squatters, though I have seen evidence of people hanging around in locations. My sister and I joke that if we ever stumble into a home owner at an "abandoned" house that we will offer free yard work services as a means to reconcile.

explored an old house once, that downstairs was fairly gutted. Made my way to the steps that led up to the attic. Walking up and looking around it was completely, empty. I hadn't gotten to the top of the steps yet, and turned around and saw a tent set up in the back of the room. I went ahead and got out of there, just in case.

There's a photo on this page, about halfway down

There is a house near me, acre and a half lot, totally overgrown with trees and shrubbery. I've never seen lights on at night, never seen any kind of movement, no cars, nothing. The driveway has a chain across it with a NO TRESPASSING sign, and it's obviously rather old and faded. I've been eyeballing it for quite a while.

On one occasion, there were several Police cars around the property. One was across the street talking with neighbors, one parked in front, one driving around the property in the adjacent fields.

On a couple occasions I have seen recycle/trash bins put out in front of the driveway. These are newer bins, and I'm not sure whether they're from the house or some smartass neighbor putting their bins on the other side of the street.

I drive by the place a couple times a week at least. One of these days I need to grow a pair and go creep the place at night.

You may wake up to find Therrin in your living room.

I'd abandon my house if that happened.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

Happened to me a couple times. First was a night explore of a freshly "abandoned" house. An ancient father and his crazy son adds to the story here... The father, who looked about 90-100 years old used to sit in his truck with the light on every night until2 or 3 am. The son was actually crazy... I used to work across the street from the house and sometimes he'd come over and talk about how demons lived in the woods behind his house, and that his property was owned by the country of England. The story goes that the father passed away and the son was taken away somewhere. Months passed and there was no sign of activity.

Me and my friend went late one night to check it out and creep ourselves out. All the doors were locked up pretty tight. Found a hole towards the back which led to a room with the washer and dryer... The entire middle of the floor was collapsed in to the ground beneath. Let me remind you they were living like this for who knows how long.

We shimmy around the wall into the living room. Boxes stacked to the ceiling with random shit with a small path through it all leading to the stairs. We approach the steps when we hear it. Thud... Thud... Thud... Coming from the stairs.

I try to tell myself and my friend it's an animal. He convinced me otherwise. The spacing and timing sure as hell sounded like human footsteps slowly walking down the steps.

That's when we got the hell out of there.

The closest I've come to exploring an occupied location was the abandoned melt shop at the old Newport Steel plant (the plant was still in operation, but the building was used mostly for storage). A friend/security guard gave us a tour.

I've run into a few places, though, where the owners still live on the property, and that's just as bad. Tried to explore an old one-room schoolhouse only to find out the neighbors like to sit out at night with a 12-gauge full of rock salt... there's another house, an old Victorian farmhouse, that I'd love to explore except that the owners live in a single-wide trailer about three hundred feet away.

I go by this abandoned school all the time on the bus. One day I was walking to the 7-11 (gotta have my cheetos) past the abandoned school and the front door was open. Just swinging in the breeze. Quite naturally I have to investigate since the door has always been locked up tight. I casually approach it since I don't look out of place to a passerby. Before I am able to enter I see a man in a suit and he sees me. I simply told him I have gone past the school before and always wondered what the inside looked like and that I was into old buildings. I made it clear I meant no harm and turned to leave. He told me they were about to have an open house and he invited me inside and let me take pictures. It was even cooler because I got to talk to some architects and city council members about what the building could be made into. Hell, there were even free snacks!
