Advice on accessing the boiler room of a hotel

So there's this 100 year old hotel which is rumored to have a boiler room that's been left untouched since it was built. I've been doing lot's of recon work the last couple months and I've figured out where it is precisely, where both access points are, when they're left open, when the area is left unattended, etc.
Now the question is: should I go in?
In other words, what are the risks? How seriously do hotels take breaking into boiler rooms? (It's owned by a big corporation if that makes any difference).
On the upside, the hotel is affiliated with the college I go to. That may make them less inclined to press charges if they catch me.

OR

I could ask the manager for access. It's possible, because of the affiliation my college has with the hotel, that they may let me in. Of course, I wouldn't have as much time/ free reign as I would if I snuck in.

My heart tells me to go in, but I've been known to do some really dumb things. I.e., I have trouble making rational decisions.

Advice?

well my friend got caught going into an active hotel (he thought it was part of the abandoned one like 5 feet away) and got charged with burglary because he "forcibly" opened a door that was secured with a piece of wire. so there is a risk but it really depends on what you are willing to risk to see whats in there, my advice is think of how bad it could be and if its worth it to you go for it otherwise id stay away.

I'd just be up front and ask for permission, show your camera, explain the historical interest and your desire to take photos. Ask if you can come back when the maintenance guy is here and have a quick 5 min in there with him.

Agreed, we talked to the guard at El Toro. It really helps.

You could definitely ask for permission. A group of us wanted to get into an amazing old hospital here and while we were tempted to explore it we asked for a guided tour and wow...it was well worth it. They were able to take us to places we might have never seen if we'd just explored on our own. The hospital itself is highly watched by locals who don't hesitate a moment to call the police if they see something suspicious. Some in our group have explored it on their own recently, but that tour was the best thing we could've asked for. I think you should ask and see what they say, someone might be able to walk you through the room and give you its history, which is cooler than just photos alone.

However, if you ask for permission and are denied you have to decide if it's worth exploring now that you may be recognizable. My advice would be to email/call when asking for permission, don't go in person. Give your first name initially, they don't really need your last name unless they ask. If they say no then give it a week or two (in case they decide to keep an eye on that area of the building thinking you might try to get in without permission). Scout the area as you've been doing, then I say head on in. If you've really got a handle on when the building is empty and accessible then I don't see why you shouldn't head in. You're an explorer after all.

The problem is that it is affiliated with your school.
At the school I went to, you could smoke pot all day long and get caught if you were an athlete, all other students got kicked out for parking on the lawn.

So you might want to ask for permission.

Sometimes it makes sense to ask a totally different person, like I wanted to get access to a roof, and I asked the counseling center if they can ask the dean and so on and this worked out for me.

This has all been great advice guys. I guess it doesn't really hurt to ask.
I'll definitely do so in the next few days.
If I'm lucky I'll have pictures up very soon!
