| | | Anyone know what these entrances are called? The concrete box with the metal grating on top.
They range from ground level to a little too high to casually climb, are grated at the top, and have a hatch that may be unlocked leading to a ladder, and they may take you to anything from a subway tunnel or offices to maintenance rooms or ventilation. I never know what to call them.

| | | Very well could be something that underwhelmingly simply. Certainly they don't all look the same though.

| | | Its basically a plenum chamber for the subway system. It releases the air pressure build up as the trains rush through the tunnels. Some lead to fan rooms. In an emergency they pump out the heat and smoke. Hope that helps.

| | | I've always heard them being reffered to as vents. Since that's basically what they do.

| | | Yeah, I just hoped they had a cooler name. Obviously they're just vents that often offer access directly to the tracks to anyone who comes along.

=) I've seen similar things above ...other underground structures.

| | | I suggest these structures be called Barometric Relief Thermal Event Discharge Chambers or BRTED buildings for short. But now I'm just making shit up. Sounds good though.

| | | Very interesting article. I'm a bit surprised by all this vent stuff because I assumed maintenance access was the main purpose, but when has a lack of need for ventilation prevented Korea from seeking ventilation? Whether you're turning on a fan or air conditioning or it's winter, someone's gonna open a window. I guess there could be a need for relieving pressure down there, because I've experienced some pretty strong winds when two trains are approaching from opposite directions.

| | | you know you need pressure relief when someone gets sucked out a window. That would be a great barometer for installing vents.

| | | Interesting article and photo; I don't think I've ever seen a dwelling re-purposed for ventilation (brownstone or otherwise) before.

| | | Though this was interesting while reading the article about tunnels. Made me remember this thread, so I had to hunt it down!
It took about three years for boring machines to completely claw their way through the ground under the seabed between England and France, but what they left behind is awe-inspiring. Two 25-ft.-wide tunnels accommodate the double-decker Eurotunnel train, which travels at speeds approaching 100 mph, while a smaller third tunnel between them serves as an escape route for fires or other emergencies. The challenges of the project were immense, such as what to do about the pressure speeding trails build up inside the tunnel. To relieve it, huge pistons were added to open and close air ducts, while hundreds of miles of pipes with cold water were laid next to the tracks to pull away heat from the air. |
