Fodice School

The community of Fodice was a freedmen's town that developed in rural East Texas following the Civil War. Some sources maintain that the town's name came from "four dice," a favorite dice game of the early inhabitants. In 1901 the growing community established their first school in the Fodice Methodist Church. In 1938 the Works Project Administration (WPA) financed and built a new school. The large stone structure included an auditorium/gym, a stage, and 12 huge classrooms.

The new school, which had an average enrollment estimated at 250 students, remained in use until desegregation in the early 1960's, when students began to be bused to other local schools. It was used as a community center for several years, but has fallen into abandonment over the last few decades as the Fodice community has dwindled to just a few homes.

I've always heard it pronounced "Fordice" or "Four Dice" (pronounced as one word either way). I've never been there, but now I'm gonna go!! lol Very nice shots.

If you guys head down there, I've got a few more recommendations in the area.

Awesome find and shots! Now I want to check it out too, lol

Just a word of advice, when downloading pics, disable the pop up for the pictures. It'll make it easier to view them.

I see you're in Houston, pm me if you'd like to meet up sometime.

There's a house and church in the same area as the school (both of which I'm planning on posting pictures of once I get a chance to upload). There are also a few spots within 30 mins, including an old victorian house and a nursing home, though I haven't been in the nursing home in years. Knowing East TX it's probably exactly the same. Mary Allen College, which is on the database in Crockett, is nearby as well.

Message me if you're planning a trip and I can potentially meet up.

WOW! too cool!

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Last time I was at mary Allen College it was in pretty bad shape. The whole side of the building looked like it was ready to collapse. Be careful around that one.
