| | | how to determine if theres steam tunnels < on 6/28/2004 5:43 PM >
| | | I go to a smallish school in Virginia and wanted to know how i can tell if my school uses steam, therefore having steam tunnels. The school has been around for more than 100 years, so I figure there might be steam tunnels, but all of the HVAC has been modernized within the past 20 years. thanks Louie

| | | How many seperate buildings are on campus... that would be the first major indication.

| | | Are there separate buildings? If so, does each building have a chimney? Have you poked around in the basements of any buildings? If so, did you notice any big white insulated pipes with yellow markings like "HPS ->" "LPS" "Cond" etc? Is there a building on the campus dedicated to heat and electricity? (look for a "heating plant" or just a non-academic building with a big smokestack.) Once you've answered a few of these questions, I can start pointing you down the appropriate path.

| | | Hi, I hope this is helpful. In my experince if you look around the basements there will usually be doors that will say "Danger" or "Authorized Personnel". Most often they are double doors but not necessarily. Most tunnels are found theough the boiler or electrical rooms of the building which are usually labeled with those signs. Creep around in there and check all the corners. You will probably find what you are looking for. Good luck! Afterthought: Be careful, if you do walk into a transformer room, be very careful. You can get zapped. Watch for that distintive 60 cycle / 60 hertz hum. That means it has live electricity. Also if your campus has steam tunnels, rhere should be some sort of central power plant as well. You might want to look for steam vents or gratings. If there's no central heating plant, there're most likely no steam tunnels. Don't dispair though, there could still be tunnels for other utilities, or pedestrian tunnels. The only way to find out is to search the basements (especially mechanical rooms).

Sometimes a heating plant will just be in the basement of a building and won't draw a lot of attention to itself. This could be the case at FatLouie's school, if it's as small as he says. Ninj http://www.infiltration.org

| | | Isnt another indication a lack or or very few overhead power lines? I believe there are many schools that run the wiring and cables through tunnels to improve the look and appeal of campus by not having telephone poles and wires. It is jsut a thought though because I have never entered a tunnel that has buildign access (that I am aware of).

| | | Yes. If there are tunnels, the telecommunications wiring will almost certainly run through them. I haven't ever seen power lines in tunnels though. That would be a safety issue, because steam tunnels flood and get, um, spontaneously filled with really hot steam now and then (often a valve or fitting grenading due to improperly designed pipes hammering it with microscopic drops of water traveling at nearly the speed of sound). wet or superheated power cables will both cause power outages in buildings and a severe danger to workers trying to restore steam service or clean up after flooding. The only high voltage electrical I have ever seen in steam tunnels is single romex feeds for the tunnel lights (and outlets) themselves. In short, it can sometimes be an indication. It is also extremely common to simply bury telecom and power lines in the ground without a tunnel, so don't interpret a lack of utility poles as a definite presence of explorable tunnels.
