Would like some input/things I could work on

Hello, I'm new to UER, but not exactly new to UE. I have had a fascination with old structures, and photographing them for sometime. I just got into working with SLR and DSLR cameras about a year ago so I'm still a newbie. Any suggestions on composition or anything else would be awesome! These are the best of what I have currently. A couple of them were taken with a cell phone camera so that's why there's a difference in quality

I think some interior shots might be nice.

Yeah I don't have any of them. I have been too chicken to go inside anywhere...Haha, maybe with some more time around here that will change.

For what it's worth:

1. I really like the composition of this shot, but I'd love to see it taken at night. Also, not sure if it's just the uploader or whatever but this shot seems very soft in places, can I ask what aperture you shot in?

2. I really like this, shame about the yellow bar. This shot uses the beach to really lead your eye to the horizon, which I think is damned neat! Again I'd love to see something at night, maybe a long exposure and also the picture quality of the upload totally ruins the shot. Try using tumblr or something.

3. Not much to say about this, it's kinda boring but I see what you're going for. Is there an interesting object in the back ground that you could show some of? It would be nice to see what you're not supposed to enter.

4. I love this shot, wonderful use of texture. Perhaps shooting it during the golden hour would provide even better lighting. Again, the quality of the upload is ghastly.

5. Similar to 3, it's a good subject but maybe needs a bit more context... very neat bokeh though.

6. Interesting building, I'm not sure about the composition though, I personally struggle a lot with this kind of shot. Again I'd love to see this shot at a better time of the day, looks like harsh midday sun if I'm not mistaken.

7. I really like this shot. As above, better day light and upload quality would do wonders for this.

Composition needs work for sure.

1. Is a little cramped. Back up a bit.

2. Too much water and loose the yellow bar.

3. Too close to an uninteresting object. My eye keeps moving to the background because it is blindingly bright.

4. I don't like how you cut off the windows in this one.

5. I wish you could read what was on the brick.

6. Point down to get more of the loading dock and straighten the verticals.

7. ... go back and use a real camera.

Good start though.

Number 1 was taken at F/8, 1/400, 200MM, ISO 100

And yes some of these I was having a terrible time with the sun. This location is about an hour away from me, so it was more of a afternoon stroll. One of these days I will go down and see what kind of night shots I can get.

Number 2, yes after looking at it the yellow bar really does take away from it.

And I notice now that the up loader did a number on these. Maybe I will re-upload and re-post them on like Flickr or something.

Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the pointers! And yes number 7 is one of the cell phone pictures. I will go back and try this one again sometime.

Wow I don't follow directions that well. Haha. I just read in the sticky's up at the top of this forum that some additional information would be good to go with these.

I'm using a Canon 20D with a Tamron 28-200 Lens Its a 3.8-5.6 I shot pictures 1-5 on the first set with this, and 6-7 with a cell phone camera.

The second set is also mine, I shot them with the Canon set up.

now I will see if I can go through what I shot each of them at.

1. 1/400sec F/8 ISO 100 200 MM
2. 1/250sec F/11 ISO 100 28 MM
3. 1/60 sec F/5 ISO 100 28 MM
4. 1/60 sec F/5.6 ISO 100 50 MM
5. 1/50 sec F/5.6 ISO 100 141 MM
6. N/A
7. N/A

Second set:
1. 1/250 Sec F/10 ISO 100 28MM
2. 1/125 sec F/7.1 ISO 100 60MM

Further to my (and others) feed back on images 3 and 5, here's an example that isn't my photo but is the sort of shot that should give you an understanding of what I mean:

http://www.flickr..../m/in/photostream/

The flower is still the subject, but it has a really interesting 'bokeh' context. If it was just a zoom in on the flower you'd think 'so what, it's a flower.' Instead you realise it's a shot in a city where a flower like this seems misplaced and therefore interesting to photograph.

Yes I see what you are getting at. I will defiantly do some work on this. Like I said maybe I will get even more into this if I spend enough time around here.

Any more critiques?

I will agree with the others and say a few of them would be much, much better if they weren't cropped so tightly.

I have been thinking about this for a while, what would you guys suggest I do to not be in so tightly yet not feel like I'm getting a bunch of unnecessary extra crap in my shots? May sound like a dumb question but I hope someone gets the just of what I'm asking. I notice I end up going for the same angle alot too, so what could I do to not get redundant and spice things up? I'm still a relative noobie to SLR photography and I'm not asking for a hand out, just some pointers. Thanks.
