|  | | | The northern part of my state is full of properties seized by the government in the middle of nowhere. I know of 3 abandoned communities, as well as a few large estates and a bunch of other houses just enveloped in foliage. Makes for an interesting hike.

| | | | I think it depends on the person and the sight they found. No matter who you are if you take the time to explore rural areas you will find something worth exploring, it just depends on if you want to share it with others and possibly risk it's security.

I almost cried when they added the feature that lets you rotate the camera position - I've seen bunkers that were nothing but grass hill till you flipped the camera around on em. That and Google-Fu. Read up on history, look for old maps where towns and things used to be.

I've found history about specific mines in the mine journals from the late 1800's and early 1900's. I've also found some books that describe mining techniques from that period. For us mine fans, it's great reading.

hehe that reminds me, I once found a published paper online from the 70's about some college students that told a professor about a cave where kids would chill in Zoar Valley NY. AWESOME info, the thing had been sealed off when they got there but they dug in, then drew an amazing map of the interior. The back was flooded and they found an old styrofoam raft lol so kids were going back there apparently, but they study never risked it.
The report tells in EXTREME detail where the entrance to the cave is today =D

| | | | Everything mentioned here so far are valuable resources that people use to find things. I would have mentioned several of them but they've already been covered.
Back before I started my new line of work, I didn't have much to do so I'd go to the library in downtown and go through their historical "vertical files". File cabinets, packed with folders of news clippings and papers on specific historical things and areas.
At one point I was spending over 40hrs a week at the library. Everything I found that was interesting I'd make a photocopy of. If it referenced a certain location at a certain spot, I'd go look it up in the topo room, then pull the lid off the photocopy machine, lay the map across it and make copies, even tape multiple ones together to copy larger maps. Then I'd make notations on them.
After a while the librarians all got to know me and they'd talk to me and I'd ask them questions about stuff. THEY usually know quite a bit about the area, and can be a wealth of information all on their own.
Also, many times libraries have "vertical files" which are not available to the "general public" but are still stored in large archives at the library. After befriending my local librarians, they'd let me into these archives; and I'd just sit by myself in a big room full of file cabinets all day and sift through them all.
Found LOTS of cool stuff doing that. It takes time and effort though. Time and effort are what most people lack who just want to "get locations" from other people.
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |

| | | | As most people have said, you should start with google maps. I have found many cool places on there. Also you may check up on some of the more detailed urban legends around you, I did that once and found a abandoned factory hidden back in some woods.

| | | | In Texas you can find buildings in the middle of nowhere. I stopped for a couple, but later on finding them on a map after a 600 mile trip is a different story. So sure there a a lot of buildings out there and you don't need to be a full member to find these buildings, you just need to keep your eyes open.

| | | | Sometimes even keeping your ears open can find you places. I heard about an abandoned house in the middle of the woods from some people in my area and I went off searching. It was fallen to pieces but I made some interesting finds there. I find locations all the time even when I wasn't a full member. It all amounts up to the time and effort you put in searching.

No you actually have a huge point here, no matter what, the profile picture is what we will see you as. Humans judge as a reflex so yeah do change your picture. This point is perfect. Photo of yourself on location could be good, showing you do take the risks to get into locations.

I agree, you should change your profile picture, to suit the feelings of others.
You could use a fist giving the middle finger, with my name imprinted across the front.
Or... wait.... okay n/m that's already been done.
