My Turn!

Just wanted to know what you guys think. This is MAYBE my 5th HDR attempt, so I am still trying to get my technique down. I do all sorts of photography (or am trying to) but feel this is my best as of yet. Taken with a D5100 w/ kit lens. I am not too impressed with the way the sky turned out but again, I am in the process of learning. What is your take on the sky? I also tried to get the building a bit more clear and defined and the rest of the pic a bit more blurry.

I like this picture for the most part except the sky and the fake lighting on the building. What software are you using to tonemap? If you're using Photomatix, make sure the Highlight Smoothness is at 100. That should get rid of the weird halo in the sky.

I'm trying really hard to not be mean here, but this actually hurt my eyes.

Thank you... As for the lighting on the building, I am not sure what caused it. It wasn't any of my doing and it was a semi-long exposure on a cloudy day with a ND filter. Must be a product of the HDR process. I am using Nik for my HDR software.

Yes, it is in the post. I only use Photomatix. It's under the lighting adjustment slider. Not sure if Nik has a similar one. Maybe under the HDR Method slider

There's gotta be a way to fix that sky but other than that I think it's a nice image. The blur is a little much but alot of people like that look. As for the lighting on the building...personally I kind of like it although I can't really say way since it doesn't look natural at all. I like what happens with the reflection in the water too. Keep playing with it. I don't think HDR is such a bad thing when artists learn how to use it to subtly enhance the image and that seems like the direction you're heading in.

Thanks again guys. I'll give it a shot with Photomatix as well to see how it comes out. But FWIW, here is the original...

See, with minor doctoring, you could make this crunchier without it looking completely fake. I'll admit that I don't find the subject matter or the way it's presented to be particularly captivating, but the first one you posted looked like you were intentionally trying to ruin the photo.

Thanks for posting the original. It doesn't look like a very good situation to use HDR. If you look at your histogram, I'm sure all of the data fits in it. If there were some real interesting clouds or something, I would definitely consider HDR. Just my thoughts.

Your focus is just not sharp enough. No amount of manipulation (on the computer or the darkroom) can make up for this.

I do like your idea of shooting it with a shallow depth of field, so that the building is in sharp focus and the foreground and background look softer.

Can you reshoot?

I actually think if you just played with levels and curves in PS on the original this would be nice. I like the fog. It just needs a bit more contrast...and yeah if you can..go back and shoot the hell outta that place. It's beautiful.

It was foggy and actually VERY rainy when I took this. That is why it seems out of focus, IMO. I am currently trying to get permission from the owner to go back and go inside and get on the actual property. I'll mess around with a few different ways to make this a better pic.

Okay, here is a bit more realistic attempt at the pic. The original picture, I was going for the dreamy/creepy/nightmare look. Again, I have these visions in my head but they don't ever turn out the way I want. Practice will get me there though.

Here is my realistic revision.

Definitely better than your first attempt IMO! Good job. Next, colour correction.

I need to start using my other computer for photoshop. I do most of my stuff on my laptop which is an LED lit screen. Gives a blue tinge to everything... I can make stuff look good on my other computer. I have tried to calibrate the screen a few times but it still doesn't come out right. People look like zombies on my laptop, but have good skin tones on my desktop... Anyone know of a better computer calibration program other than the built in Windows Vista one?
