What ya'll are calling "tacti-cool" stuff is usually extremely durable and well-made when you go for the major name brands. It is also usually not very cheap. Outside of the theoretical world, many of us use this type of gear for our exploring needs BECAUSE it is so rugged and well made.
I use this for a hydration pack, after I've seen people's brand new Camelback ones rip to shreds on their first or second explore. Been using this one for 3 years now, in over 300 mines. Haven't torn or ripped it yet. Holds everything I need, doesn't get snagged on stuff, and fits through any hole my body can fit through. (sorry it only holds P&S cams very well =P )
Let's see, UNIQUE items? I won't vomit up a massive post of all the items I think a UE ninja-commando could use, stuffed full of items I've read about on google but have obviously never used myself.... Instead, I'll say: A toothbrush and a microfiber MSR towel. The toothbrush is self explanatory. You all (should) know how they work. The towel can soak up a LOT of water, and is 95% dry just by wringing it out, is also super lightweight, and packs extremely small. It has its own mesh pouch, and has a built in loop for hanging it on stuff.
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |

So wait... your not-theoretical world is one where you won't ever have to try to to talk your way out of a trespassing charge, therefore freeing you to dress as Solid Snake (assuming you are not Solid Snake)?

There's lots of different kinds of exploring out there =) Just because it's not in MSP doesn't make it theoretical!

| | | I can't tell you how often I miss my inspection mirror when I don't have it. Even at work, there are lots of times when a mirror on a collapsible stick lets you see. It's a drain periscope, a camera screen checker, a door peeper, a look-inside-er, a signal mirror, and it isn't much bigger than a goofy pencil when it's stowed.

| | | I sometimes carry a laser range finder with me when I go underground. And I second the inspection mirror. You have no idea how useful they are until you actually get one and carry it. Edit: I really want to draw attention to the mirror's ability to function as a periscope of sorts - I once avoided having to deal with a cop by doing a quick 360 sweep of the street through the sewer grate. Before I had the mirror I was forced to simply push up the cover and hope that no one was watching. These things pay for themselves fast. [last edit 1/17/2013 1:43 AM by Tombs - edited 1 times]

| | | Not sure about "Tacti-cool" but I carry one of these 1. Its a Maxpedition Sitka Gearslinger. I like it cause its made of Teflon and the perfect size. I guess the most military thing i wear is some marine issue Vibram combat boots I picked up at the surplus store for $20 bucks. 1. I think the conversation comes down to personal preference. I like tactical style stuff because it is durable and user-friendly but I'm not going to go crazy by putting so much stuff on I look like I'm about hit the Bin Laden compound.

Sound's like the CamelBak's you saw people with are the hiking type packs you find at Walmart. I own 2 of their 'military / tactical' packs, and they are as tough as nails. I dont just use them for UE, but also for hiking, hunting, etc.. Never had a problem with them being torn up by thorns or falling apart because they were poorly made.
