last night i was running up an overpass and all of a sudden my left leg fell in a hole so far it was a nut shot. i avoided serious injury aside from the classic nut shot. ive had a few of these "it couldve been worse" situations and i often look back and it brings a smile to my face. i havent seen a thread for close calls so i figured id make one and maybe you guys have some good stories of coming close to getting f'd. a pigeon was almost my end not too long ago...

I was messing around in the dark on some platform on a small cliff and tripped over a rusty bolt... could have been toast. That's the most recent I remember.

I almost went through the floor of an old farm house once, but luckily my Dad (yeah, sometimes I explore with my Dad) grabbed me and pulled me back. Another was on a cat walk over a hundred feet up. I was walking along it slowly, but as I got to the middle it made a horrible sound so I rushed across the rest. I don't know if it was threatening to fall or not, but I sure as hell wasn't going to find out.

The major thing you want to keep in mind is your footing...alot of places are just reckless and crazy to speed through. But at the same time you have to pay attention to everything else, so at some point in exploring you'll probably get some stupid bad injury.

One time I was walking through a power plant in low light, making sure I wasn't on weak grating. I wasn't paying attention to the shadowed metal something-or other that nailed my forehead. It was rusty and awful and scraped me up fierce...clipped it by inches and the damned thing was invisible without a direct flashlight beam.

My friend rubbed his hand sanitizer into my forehead scrape in the darkness while I bitched. It sucked for everyone.

I was making my way back to a subway station and suddenly I heard the "ping" that sounds before an announcement is made over the station's PA system. I was almost positive it was going to say the next train was approaching. I started hustling along the inside wall of the curve so as not to be seen by anyone in the station and then I quickly found myself between the wall and a third rail. I stumbled... All I remember was nearly shitting myself and I winced, awaiting my certain death. But, I was able to catch my balance.

All of this happened so fast, and then I realized the announcement was simply one of those 'See something, say something' reminders... fuck... I was probably whiter than a sheet of paper after that, and I felt sick to my stomach, but I was never so relieve to climb up on a platform.

I learned many things from that day. Most importantly, that was the day that I learned I am a massive fucking retard.

EDIT: This is supposed to discourage newbies, BTW. Just stay the fuck out.

Just yesterday I had one of these.

I was in an old Super Walmart and tripped on a pipe. There were holes in the floor which I assume were for plumbing(?) and I nearly fell into one. About 2 feet wide.

Took a step backwards to frame a shot. Then froze, looked behind me, and saw a 5 story hole just a few feet further. So... always look.

I was exploring a cave with a friend years ago who insisted I wear a helmet (it was in my early days; I was sure I didn't need one)...

Following him, I cracked my head on a low-hanging rock jutting from the roof. My vision went black and I fell to my knees and saw stars. I was completely shocked by the force of the impact (I'd only been walking, after all).

I recovered quickly and caught up with him, and never told him anything happened: I felt like such a complete dumb ass and was too embarrassed.

Lesson learned: I have my own helmet now.

wasn't paying attention and nearly walked straight into a giant hole in the floor that went down at least 20ft, nearly went down a set of stairs that ended halfway down and were unsecured, now i always watch the floors and check the stairs before i go down them

I just had to get close to a floorless kitchen. Noting the slanted collapsing floor ahead of me, I tried to follow the support beams...and fell into the floor. Not through, but into. I saved the camera mainly thanks to landing conveniently on the tripod, which more or less sank into the floor. Meanwhile, if you were in the basement you'd have seen a leg and arm come down.

I dusted myself off and only a finger was bruised. But the next day at work for some reason that finger randomly lost all blood flood. Turned pure white and went numb for ten minutes...I was scared out of my skull. Nothing fixed it for that first while. Eventually a warm water rub did it.

Lesson: Stay away from floors when your head tells you to stay away from floors.

On a serious note, though. Once I was in an abandoned mental hospital in my hometown. Had two close calls in one night. The first was with police. My partner was a bit careless with his flashlight. He kept hitting windows with it and all. then suddenly...he flashed past 2 cops. They turned, yelled, and ran towards the door. We hid. Spent 2 hrs laying on a pile of broken brick with an old door pulled on top of us. Finally, they left. We come out, all pissed off, and decide it's time to cut and run. We take off in the dark towards the front door, only to find a hobo with a baseball bat in the path. He was dead set on some sort of confrontation. And we really were done with the whole night, at this point. Didn't know if he had any buddies, so we went through him and left. I still have the bat. He didn't hurt either of us, or anything...but I consider it a close call. One swing away from a crushed skull is a close call, in my book.

One thing that SHOULD be noted. I cannot stress enough that we do not like confrontational situations. However, the guy was DEAD SET on it. He was gonna block us and chase us, and he was insistent that there'd be trouble. Don't ever look for it, always try to walk away from it, but when all else fails...a swift kick to the junk coincided with a fist to the jaw from your buddy...well, it works wonders. We're both USMC (former) and regretted the situation. Nor did we work the guy over. But I -did- take his bat, just as sorta a 'rub it in' gesture that we tried to say "We're leaving" and that wouldn't pass with him.

Rummaging through papers and stuff at Dixie Square, my foot went through the plywood floor at least twice; both times stopped by HVAC ducts underneath. Also had one leg go down a vent hole in the floor of the Palace theater which was rather painful.

I was climbing down a ladder and the bolts were loose. The first few steps were fine but then suddenly the top part of the ladder gave way I went backward a bit. Luckily I was able to grab onto a small ledge and slowly climb down the sturdy part of the ladder. I wasn't too high up but if I fell and broke my leg I'd be screwed since that ladder was the only way in or out. Now I check every ladder before I get on it.

I was wandering through an ice-filled train tunnel a year or so back...you could see, but the floor was black and invisible. At some point I slipped and nailed my head...I don't recall losing consciousness. I just recall frantically scrambling to grab my point and shoot and ensure it was fine. My head pain came after that panic.
