Trying something new

Lately I've been trying some square crops. I kinda like them but they're not really suitable for printing. Should I stick with the standard 10x15? I'd appreciate some opinions.

I used to take a lot of square photographs. I really like the look of the format and you can have some creative uses of the space if you're shooting your image with a square crop in mind and not just post cropping and hoping you've got your subject inside the crop. For some images I think it's much more powerful than a rectangular image. I don't see why you would have issues printing them.

As for your images you presented, I really like them. You could have opened up the shadows in #2 a little as it's a bit difficult to see what it is with such strong blacks over the box. Your use of lines is very sting and guides the eyes to the right places of the photograph. And as a very symmetrical photographer myself, I like your use of symmetry.

It really works for some of them, like 3. But the same stuff applies...the perspective is off noticeably in 1.

I don't see why they wouldn't work, I like them. But you've probably got less room to play with your lines.

Thanks for the feedback! All images have had pretty drastic perspective correction in Ps.

You could have opened up the shadows in #2 a little as it's a bit difficult to see what it is with such strong blacks over the box.

Thanks I'll keep it in mind.

3 is a great image and definitely benefits from being cropped square. The framing really accents the symmetry of that shot. I like 2 a lot as well, although I agree with the comment about the shadow details. If it were me, I would probably crop 1 as a horizontal and lose the railing in the foreground and much of the ceiling. I think that would help some with the perspective weirdness, although it might still look a little wonky.

Excellent shots. Plenty of places will print square.
