| | | I'm sorry you're going through such Hell. Lately I've been wearing mine less and less and now I'm too the point where I don't even always bring it. It's easy to brush it off if there's an open window or something. But I think, after reading this, I'm going to make more of an effort to wear it most of the time that I'm exploring even if it's uncomfortable. I don't go super often but who knows how much exposure it really even takes. Scary shit. I sincerely appreciate the wake up call.

| | | This is a terrible story... when I first came onto this site I created a thread asking about health issues and if anyone on here has suffered from it. No one came forward with anything this serious, so it definitely should be a wake up call. Did they ever determine exactly what it was? (asbestosis, pigeon lung, etc)?

| | | Well I hope it means alot to you to know how many people are aware now. I lived in a house loaded with asbestos when I was younger, in the century it was in my family there were no respiratory or cancer deaths aside from the one smoker. I always figured asbestos was way overinflated. My year of keeping the respirator at home is over.

| | | Thanks for sharing. I have a small amount of asbestos exposure from work when I was younger - I didn't think about all the exploring that might be adding up, too. I'm buying myself a respirator tomorrow. *hugs* Let us know if we can do anything for you.

| | | Heavy stuff Maypost. Sounds like you are on the road to recover, which is good to hear, glad you're still with us I don't do much exploring of old buildings but will definitely be picking up a respirator before entering anymore. I think in our community especially it's pretty easy to ignore the risks, and hazards involved. We're so used to ignoring warning signs and such, that often times its easy to write them off. Thank you for posting this! [last edit 9/3/2012 4:31 AM by MeoW - edited 1 times]

| | | as soon as the funds are in i'm getting a respirator. i think these stories are invaluable, stops people from thinking the dangers are all hype. there are still avenues to follow in the pursuit of exploring....hope you get to it again soon.

| | | A heartfelt thank you for sharing your story. I've taken numerous foolish risks (and walked away without going in other times), but asbestos exposure was not on my radar until now.

| | | Thanks very much, everyone. It was especially nice to see some old and familiar faces chime in. Very therapeutic indeed. I am truly glad that this story will reach even a handful of people and possibly prevent this from happening to anyone else. To me that almost makes my ordeal worth it. I am not by any means out of the woods. I actually just got back from yet another stay in the hospital and I doubt it'll be my last. But every day in different ways, I am getting stronger. After being away for so long, I wondered if anyone would remember me. It's very heart warming to see that a community that was such an important part of my life proved to soar leaps and bounds beyond my wildest expectations. We all may be sarcastic, abrasive and aggressive(and that's just the As). But it's plain to see that while we may troll and bicker a whole hell of a lot but we really are a community in the true sense of the world. That knowledge really is the best medicine for me

| | | Your candor is very much appreciated sir. Yours is among many cautionary tales I've read here lately. It's important to be reminded that this is a risky hobby, and also that some of the risks can be mitigated. All the best to you. May your recovery be nothing short of miraculous.

| | | I'm not sure if anyone is local enough or would even be interested but... I am hosting a charity event for S↑2C(Stand up to Cancer) on Sunday. Thought I'd share incase anyone would want to come and help make a difference. https://www.facebo...notif¬if_t=like Also, I kow I'll get shit for this... But Taylor Swift just released a new song called Ronan. When you download it from iTunes(for only $1.29) every sent goes to finding a cure. So at the least, think about donating there.
