| | Other things that would cause a drain to flood besides rain < on 8/26/2012 6:45 AM >
| | | While observing this video I noticed this drain the explorers were in overflowed even though it was not raining. http://www.youtube...atch?v=wpbU-A9sEvI Go to 1:45 to see what I am talking about. Ive walked miles of drains and never had a problem. But I dont want a problem either. I dont go when it rains. Other than rain what else could happen to cause it to fill with water suddenly? Is there some kind of system that blocks certain drains, then releases the built up water later to stop drains from becoming to full? Perhaps some of you more adept drain explorer could enlighten me so I know what to watch for. I dont want to become a famous drain explorer the wrong way.

...And it is possible that a business is (legally or illegally) releasing a large amount of water into the storm drain system.

+3 I've had terrifying near flood experiences in drains as well. At night and in the city a popular one seems to be emptying pools. It's happened 2 or 3 times to me, walking down a drain then BAM, side pipe starts gushing lukewarm water that smells of chlorine for a few minutes.

Sounds like this is the unfortunate truth. My favorite drain that I go to is about 7-8 feet tall. I was a couple miles into it and toward the top of the drain there was some bars sticking out about 4 inches. On these bars I noticed debris such as leaves and grass stuck to them. I realized the debris was there because the water level actually got that high. It was dry and not raining at the time but I do have to say that sight was somewhat disconcerting as the leaves were still green. This indicated that it was recent. I definitely do not want to be there when the drain gets that full. Im hoping it only gets that full during a huge 3 day down pour.

| | | In Scotland we have a extensive hydro power system i have seen some really big Drain entrances when hillwalking like this
the water can be released automaticly by hydraulics and the speed and volume would kill you. Sometimes it doesn't have to be raining where you are if there is a high in feed from hills like where i live you also have to keep a eye on the overall weather pattern would suspect the same applies to any country with mountain ranges and high rainfall

| | | There is a drain in Dayton that has a large water outlet of some sort that drops down out of the ceiling. The strange thing about it is that it is very warm, clean, heavily chlorinated water. It is intermittent, but usually it's left on. It is a very high volume of water (probably in the hundreds or maybe even thousands of gallons per minute) coming out at high pressure (easily enough to knock you over if you're not braced for it). I'm pretty sure it's an illegal hook-up of some sort. It's actually really fun to discard some clothing and stand underneath it! But if you weren't expecting it, and it turned on when you were in the drain, it could definitely be pretty scary! Although it's not enough to actually flood the drain. So yeah, illegal hook-ups like this could be another cause for random drain flooding. But this is pretty rare. In general, in any network that connects to a CSO, sewer, or hydroelectric tailrace, you should be aware of the possibility of a mechanical release valve, even though they are rare. Also, if the drain is ridiculously oversized for the amount of water that it seems to carry, that may be a warning sign.
