Say things about these photos

I don't know why I haven't checked in sooner. I've changed alot in how I've been shooting lately--understanding curves better, different angles, color balance, etc. Still not too great with composition, it's something I'm wanting to fix.

Positive critique feels great and all, but I'm more looking for negative about my recent stuff.

1. Initially meant to be taken straight, it came out slightly tilted and I dug it. Rotated further and used clone tool to keep from cutting off important lines.

2. Struggled with straightening and, of course, the light. Several lens flares are loosely cloned out.

3.[/b] This was an actual attempt to just do a decent B&W, not hide bad lighting

4. I found this shot came out much less confusing with the wheel in the corner to help suggest what you're viewing.

5. Literally got into a debate with my girlfriend about the doorframe on the left. Somehow I considered 'but I intended to clip the frame!' to be a good excuse for bad composition.

Consensus?

1. I'm not sure what you're going for on this one. The tilting looks out of place, and even if it were straight, it'd still be a fairly conventional shot.
2. Perhaps a closeup on the mold would be beneficial. That's the first thing that comes to my eye.
3. This one could be better if you included the right side of the hallway just opposite the chair. It feels cut-off as it is right now.
4. I like this one a lot, but I think it'd be a good idea to include more of the wheel, or position it so that it's more noticeable.
5. Balance it out and you have a good photo.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

You gotta get a little more of the door frame in the last one.

I'd say the best shot is the 3rd one but that is a shot that has been taken a lot.

1. I dig it too.
2. Nice processing. I like this one.
3. This one is ok. I like the dark shadows.
4. I don't like the colour, processing or the image. You can't see enough in the reflection to make it worth while.
5. Not bad. It's crooked and the perspective is off but the processing is nice.

1. Try putting a B&W filter on it maybe? The only colors I see are orangey yellow and brown, it might look nice if it was in black and white with the shades very extreme. Boost the saturation and put a higher contrast and then put in black and white. Grungy McGrunge.

2. Nice photo, only critique I have is that I kinda wish that the vertical line made by the corner of the walls wasn't so close to the center. I'm obsessed with rule of thirds, perhaps that's why I automatically become irritated if lines don't meet the one-third and two-third sections. I'm also a big fan of blown out light, as disgusting as others think it is, so I don't mind the light from the left side of the photo at all.

3. This is my favorite photo that you have taken that I have seen, ever. The narrowing dark hallway reminds me of a specific CT location that I know you've visited, so seeing that automatically makes the picture great to me personally. Also, I'm the king of not being able to find wheelchairs in abandonments, so seeing three placed so elegantly in one picture is awesome. I really hope you found them that way too, if not, at least it made for a good picture.

4. You are very right about including part of the wheel. If it wasn't included not only would the picture be confusing, but since the reflection isn't strong, it wouldn't even be very well composed. My only complaint (because I'm an asshole) is that I don't like how the wheel looks a little fuzzy... maybe out of focus? If it was intended that only the reflection was in focus, I would try and put a little bit of a gaussian blur on the wheel to make it look more intentionally out of focus. The state it's in right now is sorta-blurry-but-clear-enough... something I used to do all the time with my own photography, hence why I notice it and critique it so hard.

5. Honestly, the clipping looks fine since the line continues straight down and doesn't cut off to the side, and the fact you made the green leaves come out instead of having a blown out white looks nice. I enjoy when people take time in editing little things like that, mainly because you're so used to seeing people be lazy with their photos.

Overall, this is some really really great stuff. I wish I could express how awesome 3 is. Also, props for doing all of them in portrait. Since I have a piece of shit tripod and I don't naturally like shooting in portrait, the perspective looks more interesting to me than it may to others.

Also, feel free to not listen to anything I just said. I'm just a rookie. Just a personal take.

Thanks all, I realized [after my debate with the wife about the last one] that I have no idea how to receive negative critique.

I think you have to learn it, she's an art student and tells me about how you're not allowed to speak when being critiqued. Naturally I respond in my head just from reading critiques...oftentimes with very valid reasons. My most common defense works against basically everything--If I didn't use this angle/method then [unwanted object #3661] would be in the shot. And it's true, half my shots are a degree off from clipping something ugly...but regardless, my excuses negate the critique and stop improvement. It's foolish.

Does composition seem to be the primary thing I need to improve? I feel as if I've gotten lighting, color, and concept figured out enough now that it's at least not currently a problem.

Also...does anyone else out there actually like dutch angles? They pretty much turn me on.

They were all just sitting there in that exact manner, which is incredible but you do have to consider that they were put there by a previous explorer.

As much as I like the shot, Adv is right--it's pretty much the one people take when they get here. It's so intense looking that it's hard to not shoot it that way...it's actually something still scary in UE.

I have looked at these photos for a while trying to think what to say. And I don't have much. But, I enjoy looking at two the best. I'd suggest. Stop thinking about processing as much as you do, and start considering intent of your photo, And what you're trying to say. Attempt to be precise. I guess anyway.

Just from an angle and composition standpoint, I would suggest pushing both a lot more to make your shots more deliberate. if you're going to angle a shot, do it more to look intentional rather than have people ask if it's a mistake or not. if you find yourself bending down or getting on one knee to get in the ceiling, take it further and lay on your stomach. REALLY push those angles. Also, your wife is right about critiques as an art school graduate myself.
If the intent is to learn, than listen to everyone. You obviously don't have to do everything they say. But I found as soon as I didn't take offense to any ones criticism, it opened me up to all different ideas. Often, someones criticism would get me thinking in an entirely different direction that I didn't even consider. I wouldn't even necessarily do what the person mentioned, but what they mentioned took my thinking down a different path witch led to my artwork changing. Keep shooting, keep asking people and have fun.

Thanks, this is also helpful advice. When I think on it, every usually explore takes three hours tops...my editing takes the rest of the week. I may have my priorities mixed up, obviously I put alot more work into corrective measures rather than taking the shot to start with.

Too much text for quoting it to not be kind of obnoxious.

This. I really like the idea, and I've been trying in small doses but maybe not enough. My last few trips out I've been very frustrated that my tripod doesn't go down low enough...nor can I ever find a place to climb with it.

So I think I've got my idea. Normally I'll shoot a subject simply because it's epic enough as is. But any talented photographer who happened to be standing there could easily catch the lighting or how long the hall is. But they might not all see it in the same direction, compositions, or angle at all.

Dude, my tripod makes me so angry sometimes. banging in to things, catching on things, etc....and once, I had a tripod fail and almost cost me a $1000 camera + lens, but I'm always thankful I have one. It's nice to explore in an area where you have plenty of time to set up a shot. Don't rule out a gorilla pod and a cable release. you could get away with that setup for 50 or 60 bucks may be?

You've really come a very long way in a very short time as photographer just from what I've seen here on UER.

I like your shots here and I think everyone else has pretty much covered the good, bad etc. But I just wanted to quote the above phrases because it's the best thing posted so far. I have a really hard time with it too it's easy to just blast away and think "I'll fix the little things later" but it's so much easier when you get it right in camera.

And like randomesquephoto said I find I like my photo's much more when I try to make them tell a story and have a clear purpose as I'm shooting them.

Thanks again, I'm actually on vacation very out of state right now and haven't taken a single exploring shot. The lack of exploring has simply been due to failure, but I think it's been good for me.

I love dutch angles, and I tend to do a lot in my photography. The only problem with #1 is if your going for the dutch angle look its not dramatic enough. Like seedy said, It has to look like its intentional and doesn't make people wonder if it was a mistake.

I personally enjoy your photography and I think you have continued to improve! Keep up the good work!

#1: I love the colours, personally not a giant tilt fan, I think if it were even a little heavier tilt then maybe, but awesome colours and contrast!

#2: My favorite, love it.

#3: I like black and white, but only when it's crazy sharp and punchy, might crank it up a little or go back to colour. I also would have liked to see more of the right.

#4: Awesome concept and colours, maybe more wheel or even a low profile shot of the chair.

#5: Little tilt is driving me nuts, I also would have cut it off after the door frame on the left. Otherwise I like the tones and compo.

The last one still looks tilted? After enough time of trying to fix it, I can't tell anymore. Once you put forty minutes into lines you sort of go permanently blind to it.

I dont think its tilted I think you just werent standing in the exact center of the hallway so the ceiling lines a just a little bit off and not symmetrical

1. I'm not sure why you rotated it more… It only serves to make you look like you were drunk when you took the photo. I think it would be infinantly better if it was straight. The strong lighting coming from the doors it a good feel, but I think it might have been better if you increased the contrast to push the differences.

2. I'd be interested to see what kind of flares they were. I guess not the pretty ones if you took them out.

3. i think you could have paid some more attention to your processing in this one. Black and White will pick up little distractions in your toning more than colour and be less forgiving. The bright white wall behind the chair I think makes you eye look more at the wall then the subject.

4. Not a bad shot here, but it doesn't really stand out for me.

5. I agree with other comments that the balance is out on this shot. Shoot something balanced or a-symmetrical… the area in the middle just looks ugly.
