From the top:
Had they caught you, it is quite conceivable that you could've been charged with attempted arson, which is a class A felony.
I don't live in the "Land of the Free", but shit doesn't work like that up here. As far as criminal charges are concerned, there's usually a modicum of common sense - in this instance, it was the aforementioned cat we (accidentally) killed. Doused in gasoline, a fluffy-pelted housecat is a force to be reckoned with, by the standards of any otherwise effective flame-retardant measure.
Placed in a dumpster and ignited by the inadvertent efforts of the numerous degenerates that invigorate this city's nightlife, it's safe to say that the authorities had bigger fish to fry. Or, at least, the cat they intended to feed said fried fish to was a lump of charcoal by the time they showed up.

According to California law, you could've also been charged with burglary, which is defined here as entry into an "enclosure" (I'm assuming this crane was fenced-in) to commit a felony, which would've been satisfied if they charged you with felony burglary.

Point being, even aside from doing bad shit to the name of urbex and the urbexing community... one would be a dumbass to not be an angel on their best behavior in the course of being where you're not supposed to be. That flare could've easily been the difference between tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees and 10+ years of your life.

I don't live in California, but that's beside the point.
That tone's a little condescending to be coming from a guy who advocates living in perpetual fear of the accusation of things he hasn't done, don't you think?

There may be (an) element(s) of satire herein.

The perceived condescending tone was absolutely not intentional. Sorry if it sounded like that.

I know you guys aren't in Cali. But I don't know where you're from so I can't cite exactly how they can creatively interpret a butt-reaming.

Just saying it's a bad idea to expose yourself to potential screwing by people who for whatever reason may choose not to apply your idea of "common sense" toward whatever you did or didn't actually do. The citation of Cali law is simply to show that indeed all the technical points are met, and it is basically up to the judgement of the prosecutor how he/she wants to deal with you. To believe they will just use their professional "common sense" with you assumes a tremendous number of things, the most obvious of which is if they want to make an example out of you, given that they surely know about the rise in social acceptability of trespassing the form of urbex.

The facetiousness and attempt at lightening-up (pun unintended) a post with the flaming fluffy cat is obvious, so fear not about misinterpretation... but I'm just at a complete loss as to... um... yeah.

No cranes, cats, people, or property were harmed in the making of this thread, this is a cautionary tale, a tale of woe.

With out further ado, now on to the cranes.

You know, I feel that I owe you an apology. You've shown yourself to be one of the most level-headed, dignified personalities on this old UER thing. My props to you. I have a tendency to keep poking when the caged animal's rattled... it's nothing personal. As far as I'm concerned, you're an exemplary human being and I'm buying you a beer if our paths ever cross.

You're an embarrassment. You bought all your trophies yourself, didn't you?

So final score, this episode made a few people who take the internet way too seriously cry about things that don't actually affect them. I'm still having fun doing the things that this place was ostensibly about. I suggest trying it sometime if you haven't already.

so you are still talking about this eh? excellent way to disprove your stance above. i hadn't really looked back at this until my name came back up(gotta love watchwords). so now that you have come back to tell me i am an embarrassment i am back to help you see its the other way around. in my opinion(and many others listed above) this was a stoopid idea, no big deal live & learn. yet you can't seem to see it. that you are still coming at people that take UE seriously & don't like people giving us a bad name just reinforces my original statement, i'd go further to say i'm glad you are a basic member, because i would hate to see some place i like lit up by your BS. the original poster of this thread seems to get it. so i am unsure as to why you are still bothering to talk to me about it. i am not gonna praise your other shots or apologize for my sentiment because your presentation has taken precedent over your photos. you misinterpreted dtew immediately & he was just trying to offer a warning. you are clearly insecure & attention hungry. im sorry for that.

that you think this doesn't affect anyone but you is why i am still talking to you about this. your take on how these actions do not affect us or the general view of this already precarious pass time that we here share really tells me something about you. it tells me that you only think of yourself & means to me you don't consider yourself a part of this community at all. when you say stuff like:

I'm still having fun doing the things that this place was ostensibly about. I suggest trying it sometime if you haven't already.

i try to remember that as a BM you can't see so much of what this community IS about but then i just kinda giggle at your ignorant flailing about while you attempt to insult like 90% of the people here. well played it's no wonder you are still a BM. so yes please get back on your meds.

Posted by arntzville
If I was going to do something that dumb risky, I'd make sure I had a much better angle to capture a photo of it. But that's a big if to begin with.

Posted by Steed
Seriously, that's what happened? You set off a flare, basically a symbol for "Everybody look over at me and probably send rescuers!" and you still didn't flee immediately. I gotta say, that's pretty foolhardy.

also these ^
even the original poster:
Posted by PorkRenegade
Indeed foolhardy, I thought it would make for a nice light paint of the crane, lesson learned.

so when are you goona learn your lesson?

What is UER about? Well, it says right up there that:

The Urban Exploration Resource is a website which offers many resources to the average urban explorer. A large forum, spread across several websites, allows the community to exchange ideas.

The Location Database allows anyone in the community to create, update, and comment on a specific Location. A Location is defined as a building, drain, tunnel ... essentially any location where UE might take place.

UER is created and maintained by Avatar-X

Explore the site, and Enjoy!

But we're here to argue about internet penises. Not UE ethics, not when the first UseNet UE discussion was about the same shit we argue about today. We're not here to settle whether it is or isn't kosher to launch an emergency flare, since you and I and that guy there have each our own opinions. No, it's all about internet dicks. And who can win the argument before the mods lock the thread.

Perhaps there's some three-way history between MadCap, Salami Avenger, and PorkRenegade. Maybe this flare-launching thing is a habit? That doesn't matter much though, because your argument won't move anywhere. It's very difficult to change someone's opinion over the internet. Heck, I won't even convince you of that -- proving my point. I think everyone here knows that launching a flare from a crane is a bad idea. It's illegal (And the UER Terms of Service forbid advocating illegal activity beyond simple trespass), but that's not very important to us. But it is unwise.

There are many things that are permitted but unwise. It's perfectly legal - and perfectly stupid - to hit your knee with a hammer. It's accepted practice here to climb cranes, but unwise to 'blow up' the nice climbs in the area. Some of our people who climb tall cranes were quietly contacted by BASE jumpers to stop posting all the good climbs. It's a peer-to-peer request to not piss in the pool for everyone else. And it's not something you are going to be convinced of. Will you, or won't you?

Nice pictures. I can't see many of them for some reason, but I'll fix the connection here. Mind that next time you use flares it's a better shot ;)

Oh, and marine flares in drains are BAD. BAD BAD BAD. Very pretty though.

Finally, someone gets it. I never went on the record to say any of this was intelligent. It was a series of poor decisions that ended in hilarity, no arrests, and a photograph that might be considered food for thought.. A vibrant night, if you will. Possibly a good explore too, if you're into that.

applesnail, I want to thank you for expressing yourself in an articulate fashion and not having your head up your ass. You strike me as a good dude. I'm buying you a beer if we ever meet as well. I think we're on the same page, even if by contrast I'm more ostentatious about being a shithead.

I actually read hardly any of it. You're clearly an idiot, and to do so would be a waste of my time.

But, you do care a lot about my opinion! Thank you! It means the world to me! Seriously though, I have a tendency to tune out when sycophants get high and mighty, so I'd appreciate it if you could re-iterate your ire to me, minus the butt-hurt. Proper grammar and punctuation wouldn't hurt either.
Your original point with feeling is lost on me, however, so maybe you can recommend a few good books?

I love to read, unless it's written by an idiot.

HEY! enjoy your basic membership. I am glad you can't see the full membership database. someday when you mature & reconsider your views on community maybe one will take you in...maybe even this one. until then you clearly have it all figured out, carry on. lol. i mostly read non-fiction, old myths, ect.. try the tao te ching, its one of my favs.

your reply to AAS is the first to contain any signs of you seeing that this was a bad idea. thank you anapplesnail! i don't care who does it as long as you can admit it.

if you care so little about the opinions of the Mods & members of this community(unless they are praising you) then why bother posting here at all?
no, you didn't defend doing this nor until now did you suggest it was foolish.

you have made your opinion on our community pretty clear to me as well as your sense of judgement.

as far as being an idiot, iam. i have been called one before & will be again..
..however it doesn't take me nearly as long to get it as it took you on this thread. so what's that make you? lol.
when 98% of the people you are getting through to are suggesting your actions were foolish, it is time to question either your audience or your actions.

so i am gonna try a different approach & hope it works better for you:
