| | | I drive a good ol' Plymouth Breeze. It has what I call a "dead body trunk", which can fit a shit ton of stuff. It's also dark green, so it hides pretty well outside sites. It also looks pretty normal, so no one seems to notice it.

| | | I sold my 2002 cummins, and bought a car (long story). Iv always loved Honda's, so I decided on my 2007 accord. It's great on gas, reliable, and safe to drive. It's also low key for u.e, its not loud, or stick out like a sore thumb.
Sorry for the dark pic... [last edit 6/20/2012 2:17 AM by RunkPock - edited 1 times]

I agree with you on the "white" part and a Ranger (or other small pickup) is always a good choice. This one was better than my current one since it was white but still a bitch to hide if need be.

| | | Posted by arntzville Personally I think you're insane to get rid of that Subaru if it's still running well - especially to buy a Ford. To look on the bright side, though, you sure won't have any problem selling it. Some other person will put 100k on it for short money.
|
Agreed, you are nuts to get rid of a Subie that is technically still "young." Fords are disposable cars. I own one. It was free, so I can't complain, but I know it won't see anywhere near the miles you've put on your Subaru so far.

Not to turn this into a pissing match but I have to disagree with you one this one. The white Expedition just above had 187,000 mile on it when I got rid of it and not a single problem...other than...tires, brakes and the normal maintenance items.

| | | Although I would be okay with a station wagon, I prefer 2/3-door cars. However, I see no reason to even think about getting an SUV or some other tractor. I sat in a Nissan Terrano yesterday and decided that I'm never going to get anything like that. [last edit 6/21/2012 8:41 PM by Tupsumato - edited 3 times]

I also disagree. I had a 92 Thunderbird I got with low miles. It had a few off road adventures on it. Sold it running to buy a 91 Ranger 4x4. Ranger had 140k? when I got it. Drove it 600 miles home. I tore the hell out of it. Off road adventures, jumped it, and it did tons of scrap metal runs. Only sold it because I needed cash. Then I had a 2000 Taurus. It had 220k on it when I got it. Also tore the hell out of it. Sold it because we were moving at the time. Then my girl got a 2011 Focus that we shared. It made it to Santiago Peak in Cali. Traded it in. Now we are on a 2012 Focus and it has been great. But to the answer for the thread, I prefer trucks most of the time. But I do really enjoy the MPG you get in a car.

| | | This is my Forester. Not exactly low profile. Not at all quiet either. It's swapped with a 2.2l block from a legacy and has Wrx Dohc heads and cams and a stock wrx turbo. That's why I have the Sti hood scoop. For the top mount intercooler. She's fun and fast but as I get older I'm kind of growing out of the "tuner" scene and finding myself enjoying my time doing outdoors stuff with my girlfriend and our dogs ie; disc golf, bike trail riding, target shooting, wandering the woods etc...we're even planning a 3 day back packing trip to the porcupine mountains here in Michigan in the upper peninsula. So technically yes it's perfect for my lifestyle but as I said I'm just growing out of driving flashy and fast cars and want something that just sips on gas. My girlfriend has an escape anyways so two SUVs/station wagons aren't necessary (although I am a sucker for station wagons).

I'm most assuredly *not* a Ford fan. I can't put my finger on a real reason; I just don't particularly like them. However, there is nothing wrong with Fords. Some models, particularly the Ranger, have an excellent durability record. There are thousands of Rangers in daily fleet use. The Ranger is one of the few Fords that I'd consider owning.

| | | My JettaWagen TDI (that's equipped with a steel belly pan for driving into abandonments and down super shady mining roads) is typically what I take exploring.
It's got the fuel economy (almost 1,000km/tank), who ever suspects the station wagon?, and has 430,000km of awesome on it. It also fits four adults and all of their exploring and camping gear for a whole weekend comfortably.

I do like Subarus, but Kzoobaru has already provided his reasons and they are not illogical.
Posted by Kzoobaru Like I said I love my Forester so much and I'm going to hate seeing her go but she has 214k miles and is a 1998 so I'm just looking to get something newer in age and miles now. I absolutely love Subarus but this time around I'm going back to the American vehicle route and my two considerations are the Focus wagon and Ranger; preferably in white. Focus would be more roomy and comfortable and have slightly better mpg but the Ranger would have more off road capability and Id have the bed to haul any kind of crap that I want/need.
|
He has enjoyed the Forester but feels he needs a newer vehicle with fewer miles. Since he (apparently) lives in North America, he would like an American vehicle. He would find Ford parts less expensive than Subaru parts. He can find more mechanics knowledgeable about Fords. It comes down to: Focus wagon vs. Ranger Focus: I like keeping gear out of the weather. Having it possible to get to gear from the driver's seat. Ability to carry more passengers. I know less about the Focus's track record. Ranger: Excellent record of durability. Better ground clearance (is it needed by OP?). More load carrying capacity (Again, does OP need that?). The most low profile vehicle there is (And I see advantages to that beyond UE). Perhaps a Ranger with a topper might be his best option (?).

| | | Ok, let me chime in here since I sell Ford (and Lincoln) vehicles for a living........ Both the Ranger and Focus (wagon) have great track records but if I were going for durability and functionality, it would definitely be the Ranger for an exploring vehicle. You can beat the shit out of them and they will keep on going. Plus, better ground clearance and the Ranger has a tendency to "blend" in since there are a lot of them used as service vehicles.
